About

Hand sculpted Artisan Paper and Gemstone Jewelry by Taylor Twigg

How It All Began
_________________________
I started my artistic adventure after transferring from a US college to an American university in London as a history major. I was required to take an art class, and I chose photography. Photography has always been a passion of mine. After that one class, I realized that I preferred to have my hands doing something instead of dusting off old books in the library for research.
I was very, very lucky in that my university professors chose to present art in a less traditional, less formal manner. I have always preferred to go my own way, and for me, this environment was perfect.

By my senior year, I really began to view myself as an artist for the first time in my life. My professors really gave me the confidence to view myself in a different way. Without them, I truly do not know where my life would have led me, and I will always be so very grateful to them for helping me to truly see myself.

The Jewelry Side of my Art
________________________________________
After graduating from Richmond, the American University in London in 2007, I returned home to the wilds of West Virginia to pursue my art and got a bit overwhelmed by the absolute freedom. I spent nine months sculpting an incredible clay sculpture. I tend to work in minute details, and this piece was perhaps the most detailed and complex piece I have ever done. But when I completed it, I ended up burning myself out and losing my passion for it.

I have long had a love affair with jewelry, and I decided to pursue that passion. Jewelry to me has always been more than a pretty thing to wear around your neck. I like it to mean something, to evoke something. I have always used jewelry to change my mood or to change how I view myself. At times, jewelry has been like a shield for me, and at other times my beacon of confidence. I can pull any piece out of my jewelry box and tell you what it meant to me at that time in my life, and why.

I wanted to create this same sort of emotion within my own jewelry line. Paper to me was always a natural choice. It has so many facets to it and is such an underestimated medium. I wanted my paper to be as strong as the metals it was incorporated with, and as beautiful as any gemstone. I wanted my jewelry to be as complex as my clay sculptures, but so much more delicate. And above all, I wanted my pieces to have meaning to people.

My Paper Technique
___________________________________
I spent many months developing my paper sculpting process. It is not paper mache. It is not paper stretching. It is not decoupage. What is it? It's my own specialized process. It's my own specialized sealants. It's a piece of jewelry with an obsessive attention to detail and hours of hand sculpting. Working in intricate detail has a strangely calming effect on me. I never send out a piece that I am not proud of. I never cut corners. I will also at this point not do tutorials or share my technique. The art world is exceptionally competitive, and I was told in university by a brilliant artist to never give away whatever you can make unique about your work. I hope that you will understand that, and hopefully you will appreciate that.

I am an entirely self taught jeweler, which is incredibly difficult at times, and has an incredibly steep learning curve. I spend a lot of time failing at things before I succeed. But I am grateful to be designing jewelry. I hope that these pieces will mean something to you as well, and that they will be as relevant to you in twenty years as they are to you today.

Inspirations
________________________________
I am inspired by everything around me, as broad as that might sound. Nature is a constant font of ever changing beauty and inspiration. Movies inspire me. The atmosphere described in a book. Sunlight behind leaves on a windy day is my personal kryptonite. As are the stars, which I can never quite capture in my art and it endlessly frustrates me. I like to look at the jewelry people wear and wonder how I can get them into my jewelry.

My favorite piece is always my next piece. My newest pieces always represent some sort of growth to me. All of my designs are always floating around in my head, and I will work through a design in my head for months until I finally pick up my pliers and wire and make it happen...if the wire lets me. As Alexander Calder said, wire has a mind of its own. Wire is never quite as accommodating as you might think, and it generally likes to have the lead.

I often get asked by bloggers in interviews where I hope to be in ten years. I hope to be better than I am today. I hope to have grown within my medium. I hope to have pursued my passion for writing. I hope to still have passion. But, as with anything in life, I know that hard work is the only thing that makes hoping worthwhile. So I hope that I am still working hard, and I hope that the hard work pays off.

Frequently asked questions

Wholesale availability

I am not currently offering wholesale or consignment.

Please note that I do not offer wholesale prices or discounts for individual orders (meaning one item, two items, three items, or any quantity of items). I am a self employed, self representing artist. I price my work as affordably as I possibly can. Because of this, the complexity of my designs, and because of the fact that my work as an artisan jewelry designer is my entire livelihood, I am unable to do discounts for individual purchases.

Custom and personalized orders

I do custom orders. If you see a piece that you like but the colors don't quite suit you, just let me know and I will work with you to create a custom piece for you.

I require a 50% or full deposit for all custom pieces before I begin sculpting. For 14k or any gold pieces, I require full payment before I begin sculpting.

Please do NOT reshape my pieces when you receive them. Like any piece of fine jewelry, they have been specifically shaped and sealed into that shape. If you bend and reshape these pieces, they lose their original integrity. This is the same as any piece of jewelry. If you are unhappy with the shape of the piece, please contact me. I will not accept returns on intentionally damaged pieces.

Care instructions

All of my pieces are shipped with care cards that allow you to keep the structural integrity of your piece.

I recommend storing your pieces in the boxes they are shipped in, especially when travelling.

My pieces are specially sealed with multiple sealants to make them weather proof, and for you to wash your hands as many times as you would like - ie, normal wear and tear. I do not recommended that you wear my pieces while swimming, bathing, washing dishes, or working with chemicals. I recommend this equally for my paper pieces as well as for my gemstone and metalwork pieces. Chlorinated water, bleach, saltwater, dish soap, etc are not kind to jewelry, and these things can and will cause corrosive damage to your jewelry.

Care instructions

To polish a sterling piece from my line, please do not use silver cleaning chemicals or red rouge. Please only use a basic silver polishing cloth. If you need suggestions of cloths, please contact me!

You can also store your sterling pieces in a ziplock bag with a piece of regular white chalk to help prevent tarnish on your silver. It is how many jewelers store their work, and it saves you from having to polish your sterling jewelry. The chalk absorbs moisture and the ziplock bag keeps out oxygen. Oxygen plus moisture equals tarnish on your silver.

Repair Work

If you ever need repair work done on a piece, please contact me. It is easier for me to repair my own work than for another jeweler not familiar with my process to repair a piece. Also....I prefer to handle my own repairs and my own work because it's something I'm invested in and care about - I want the piece repaired properly according to my own standards, if repairs are needed.

Returns

If you are the recipient of a gift from my shop, only the purchaser of the item may ask for a refund. As the recipient, you can exchange the item for an item of equal value. You may not ask for a refund in cash value if you are a recipient of a gift. Only the purchaser can have the cash value refunded to their credit card.

I handle refunds for custom orders on a case by case basis. If the piece has been so customized that I cannot resell it, I will not issue a refund. Please ask before you commit to a custom order.

I will exchange sizes or lengths at no extra charge. Please contact me if you need this service.

Returns

If you receive your item and there is a problem with it (which I sincerely hope there would not be!!), then I will provide you with a refund. I must be notified within 7 days of your receiving the item in order for you to receive the refund. The item must also be returned to me in its original condition. I will refund the cost of the item. The money will be refunded to you within 24 hours of my receiving the item back to me in its original condition. It MUST be shipped with delivery confirmation. This is for the protection of the buyer as well as the seller.

Shipping Loss / Damage

If the post office should lose a package I send to you, I will resculpt the piece for you and resend the item. I do ship with confirmation delivery so that I am able to track the item both domestically and internationally. Most of the time I am able to track down the location of a package and get the package to you with the aid of the post office. I will need to guarantee and ensure loss of product through the post office before I replace the lost item.

Should the item arrived damaged to you, I insure all pieces that I ship. I will need to file a claim through USPS. I can either provide a refund once USPS clears the insurance claim, or I can provide a replacement. The damaged piece MUST be returned to me before replacement or refund.

Shipping Questions

If you would like overnight shipping or priority shipping for either domestic or international shipping, please contact me BEFORE you order so that I can give you the price of the shipping.

I will not forge customs documents, nor will I mark an item as a gift on a customs form. It is illegal to do so, and I could be fined or jailed for doing so. I will not take the risk. The customer is responsible for all customs charges / VAT tax fees within their country. Please research the customs fees within your country before ordering.

Please ensure that your address listed on Etsy is correct! I ship to the address listed on your Etsy account. I do not issue refunds for packages shipped to addresses that are incomplete or incorrect.

International Shipping Timelines

I am NOT responsible for expedited international shipping that is held up in customs either within the US or in your country. I have no control over the post office in the US or outside of it, and I have no control over customs agencies. I will ship quickly via the method you prefer, but I cannot be held responsible for delayed packages due to postal delays or customs delays. Please claim your package when it arrives to you. Should you wish a refund afterwards due to missing an important deadline, I will do so with communication and return of item. I issue a refund after the item is returned to me in its original condition. But please, claim your item when it arrives in your country.

I am not responsible for international VAT fees or tax
