Terebellum Studio by Kelly Franzmann

At the age of nine, I received the most wonderful gift I could imagine, a shiny, little red cardboard box with a wooden comb attached to each end. Inside the box was thread, seed beads, needles, and simple bead looming instructions. After discarding the instructions, I placed my warp threads and beaded until every last bead was gone. I forgot about my little bead loom, as children often move from one mania to another, and did not pick up beading again until high school.

This time, it was the Dutch spiral, a version of tubular peyote, that captivated my attention. I continued working this pattern throughout my college years where I obtained a degree in art education. Upon getting my first placement as a highschool art teacher, my beading again went wayward as I focused on my lesson planning and instruction.

After six years of teaching in the public schools, my husband and I moved to the U.P. where, with art education positions in short supply, I was fortunate to land at Bella Beads. Beading came back to me in full force. Working with the most wonderful and inspiring group of women imaginable, I learned and blossomed as a beadwork artist. Until the shop sadly closed, I taught a range of beading classes from the basics of stringing up through shibori silk bead embroidery, bead weaving, wire working and metalsmithing. I even taught my original favorites, looming and the Dutch spiral.

My husband and I decided that it was time for our little family to grow and welcomed a son into our lives. With his birth, I made the happy decision to stay at home with him, and we now also have a beautiful new little girl. Looking for a way to supplement my income, an Etsy shop seemed like a perfect way to make a little extra money as well as to share my work with others. The creation of work in itself is wonderful for any artist, but to then be able to share that work with others on such a large scale as through the Etsy community is very rewarding.

I started small with stellated paper sculptures, a unique item I have been making for years and then included my jewelry and plan to continue adding new items to create an eclectic gathering of hand crafted items representative of me as a crafter and artist. I share my passion for all things beaded with whoever chances upon my site. I offer up a selection of bead embroidery, earrings, 4-in-1 wrap bracelets, and beadweaving. With humble hope, I wish to share my passion for beading with you.

While my shop has mainly focused on my jewelry in the past, since having children, I have also been developing my own crochet items for baby and child. I have been knitting and crocheting for about 20 years but set it aside to focus on jewelry. Five years ago, I came back to my knit and crochet roots and began making items for my children and friends’ children. I expanded to making octopus, jellyfish and blankets for my local family birthing center. After all, the best thing that I hope comes your way with my work, be it jewelry or crochet, is joy! I hope that you enjoy my work and continue coming back to my shop to see what I have next!
