I love this print! Everything about it from the colour palette to the subject matter and the lighting are just beautiful. So much care has gone into creating this work of art, not to mention skill! Every time I look at it I notice different aspects, it captures my attention and I have to stop and look into this little world for a while. It makes me stop and smile. An all round friendly and happy experience, thank you ever so much :)

About

Colourful illustrations by Martinus van Tee to add a touch of whimsy and fun to your home.

Hi.

Welcome to the Terrapin and Toad studio. We're Martinus and Natasha, we live in Stellenbosch, South Africa with our little dog Jeff. Martinus is the artist and Natasha runs the business side of our shop.

The name Terrapin and Toad refers to a verse in the Woody Guthrie recording of "Cumberland Gap".

Our whimsical, colourful artworks feature an array of creatures and characters, from witches and dragons to sushi-guzzling bears. Martinus' work is inspired and influenced by fairy tales, folk music, and the people and landscapes of the Western Cape. He also has a particular affinity for drawing alligators and crocodiles.

Martinus loves working with pencil, Gouache and watercolours on paper. We believe the slight imperfections one finds in a handmade artwork is what gives it character and makes it uniquely human.

Our artwork is perfect for kids rooms, animal lovers and young fun-loving couples. We have a range of products; original paintings, prints and stationery with new art being created regularly. Custom work is welcome, so please send us a message if you're looking for something personal.

Thank you for stopping by. If you want to see more of our daily life and sneak peeks of new work, please find us on social media. We love meeting new people.

Frequently asked questions

Packaging

We use high quality, thick, textured paper for our paintings and prints that can't be rolled to fit into shipping tubes. We ship our artwork flat between several thick layers of cardboard to keep it safe.

Shipping

We ship all around the world from South Africa.

We try to keep our shipping costs as low as possible and only charge shipping fees for the first item. All of our products are shipped with a tracking number.

International orders will take approximately 10 working days to arrive, but can take up to 30 days due to customs delays. Because our products are shipped flat in envelopes they are generally delivered quite soon.

Any additional customs charges that may occur will be paid for by the buyer.

Materials

Martinus loves working with pencil, gouache and watercolours on paper.

For our prints we use 350 gsm Canon Fine Art Museum Etching paper which is thick and textured, just like watercolour paper. This paper creates beautiful prints that are difficult to distinguish from the original paintings.

For our stationery we use 230 gsm matt photo paper. This paper is sturdy with a smooth surface that shows beautiful bright colours.
