Why Me, Mama? A children's book about differences.

Top shop for gifts.

A buyer bought a gift from this shop and gave it a 5-star review!

Announcement    We created a book about differences, how disabilities are a normal part of life, and how everyone has something, sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't!
My little one Rose was born in July of 2020 and after a heart wrenching three weeks in a Boston NICU not knowing what was wrong, Rose was diagnosed with mild Moebius Syndrome. I looked for children's books to help her and her community understand - and didn't find ANY! So I created one.

So happy to share that the Hardcover versions are now in and available to ship out!

Please take a look at our project website https://www.acorncottagepress.com/ to see bios of the little ones that brought the animals to life in the story.

Thank you for checking out our shop and supporting representation of differences and disability in children's literature and art.

Thank you,
Katie & Arden

This little book is IMPRESSIVE and AMAZING! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Beautiful, vibrant colors, bold easy to read font! It honestly made me cry happy tears when I opened it! I will absolutely order more for gifts…this will forever be on my “go to” list. Kudos and much success on this book to Katherine, the author, and Evgeniya the illustrator! Highly recommend this book and this shop! My wish is that all on this beautiful earth embrace our unique differences with kindness, compassion and love as presented in “Why Me, Mama?”💕💕💕💕💕💕

"Why me, Mama?" A children's book about the disability experience

Everyone has something, sometimes you can see it & sometimes you can't.
"Why me, Mama?" A children's book about the disability experience

Rose the wee owl has a birthday coming up and they are planning her birthday party but she doesn't feel excited because she feels different from her friends and is worried that the other animals won't want to come to her party. As they travel around the park delivering invitations, Rose discovers that all the other animals have something that makes them different, too.

Various disabilities are individually highlighted in this book including facial paralysis/weakness, inability to abduct the eyes (Duane syndrome), club feet, cleft palate, mild, moderate & severe hypotonia, limb differences, strabismus, Autism, Pierre Robin sequence, Poland syndrome, developmental delay, speech, hearing, vision, feeding and respiratory difficulty.

These individual differences can all be found in Moebius syndrome.

The Author, Katherine Lockwood

In addition to having a disability myself, my background is as a disability rights advocate, and educator. Growing up with Cystic Fibrosis - I had a disability that you couldn't see. Now having a little one with "something" you may be able to "see", I know how important representation is. I searched for books to read to her. Books that she would later see herself in, that we could use to help her understand, and one that we could share with her community as she grows. I couldn't find one. So here we are...
