Mom and sons turn scientific messes into beautiful art
As a crafty family of three, our story began with some intriguing messes we made with scientifically-manipulated art materials. We were so amazed by the uniquely beautiful outcomes that we began making wearable and functional art...and soon launched The Arts of Science.
Our family includes Samo, a young teen who happens to have Down syndrome. He enjoys creating the art while watching the chemical responses unfold. Samo believes the messier, the better; it works as he gets amazing artistic results. J-man, the older brother by four months, is the mad scientist of the family and experiments with everything he can. He also brings his own imaginative flair. And Greta (aka Mamo) cherishes the creative and fun time with her boys...and gets to lead the clean-up process.
When we began the business, our goals had nothing to do with profits. Basically, we focused on how we can make the world a better place by:
• Supporting individuals with Down syndrome - Because Samo has Down syndrome, we are committed to highlighting the abilities and artistic skills of other individuals who rock the extra chromosome. Our long-term goal is to incorporate these special individuals into our business as much as possible as models, guest artists and employees.
• Donating our products to organizations that are important to us - We have passion about a lot of causes and want to be sure to help them the best we can. Most often we donate our products for special events and auctions or partner with organizations to dedicate profits to that specific cause.
• Minimizing our impact in this world by using earthy-friendly products that can recycled, reused and repurposed. Examples include:
RECYCLE: We recycle everything we can, especially packing materials of items coming to us. We subscribe to a special recycling service just to be able to recycle plastics, textiles and other materials we can't recycle through our normal service. We order recyclable products if they are available as well.
REUSE: Nothing gets wasted with our business. A good example is our stirring sticks. We reuse them until they simply wear out. Many have 12 or more layers of paint on them and look like works of art themselves! We also reuse our plastic bags for storage until they can't be used anymore...and then they're recycled.
REPURPOSE: Because we're incorporating science, everything has value and can be used for an experiment or final product. We're always trying to come up with multiple ways to use items...especially if it's for a use not normally thought of.
