About

A Biologist turned Artist

I’m a Puerto Rico Native since 1985, self-taught watercolor & acrylic artist, creative by birth and a learning-addict. I'm also a beach, coffee and music lover + Bohemian at heart with a vintage soul. I was born in a family of creatives, my father is a musician, my mother is a pastry chef and my grandmother is the ultimate DIYer, crochet guru, fashion designer, among many other creative hats. Since I was a little girl I learned many creative skills that I gather from all of them, I explored the ones that reasoned with me and put them into practice. The one that I loved the most was painting, and by that I mean painting with crayons and markers in a coloring book with the occasional doodling on the white space of the pages, because they looked boring. I gotta say, I was the best at staying inside the lines. In my teenage years I stopped painting because I started a love affair with jewelry design, that lasted quite some time.

It was 2003 when the time came to choose a career path, I felt the pressure of studying a career that will pay the bills, because I had in my mind the “starving artist” myth. So after 6 years of wandering in two science degrees, I became a Biologist college grad, which I love, and then made a Master’s in Science Education. After graduating, no one warned me that scientists fall under the "starving" category, the Biology field was saturated in the Island and I had to look for part-time jobs to make a living. In 2009 I took jewelry design to another level, I started selling online and in local boutiques, I was making a descent living out of my creativity.

In 2015 I lost my passion for jewelry design, and decided it was time call it quits, it was no longer bringing me joy. After that, I stopped being a creative person, I felt strange, lost, and empty, because I have always been the creative type. Then in a very defining moment of my life I fell in love again with my old love, painting, I had lost my first baby due to premature birth in February 1st 2016, and watercolor painting became part of my therapy during the healing process. Since then I have been using art & creativity as a way to express myself in a different more colourful way, that is non threatening to me. My baby gave me a second chance to be a better me, and the gift of creativity without fear, till this day it still hard to admit that without him and that difficult experience, I wouldn't be doing art, and no one would be reading this today. It’s no cliche when people say that life is short, fragile and it can change in a second, so don’t let one more day pass you by since you start living more creatively and at your full potential.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every piece comes in a gift ready packaging, with a protective cellophane sleeve, backing board and sturdy cardboard mailer.

What types of paints do you use?

I use watercolors and acrylics, my favorite watercolors Schmincke, Winsor & Newton and Dr. Ph Martin's. As for acrylics I love Golden Acrylics and Liquitex. I strongly recommend that each of you experiment with different paints and brand to discover your favorite ones.

In what type of paper do you paint your originals?

When I'm painting with watercolors I only use watercolor paper with no less than 140 lb. But when I'm painting with acrylics or any other medium I use cardstock, canvas, watercolor paper, kraft paper, pastel paper, or any other fun paper.

What type of paper do you use for the Art Prints?

I only use quality materials to reproduce my art, the paper I use for the Art Prints is the Epson Ultra Premium Matte Paper & Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper. Check each individual listing specific details.

What type of printer do you use to reproduce the Art Prints?

Every piece is printed with love at the moment of purchase, which ensures the quality of the art you're getting. I use an inkjet Epson printer with archival inks.

From paper to print

I create the original art with watercolors, acrylics, inks and/or any other type of tool that has color in it. Some of my pieces are made with just one medium and some are mixed media, which makes every piece even more unique. When I digitize my artwork I like to keep the piece with as much details as possible, I want the print to feel and look like the original piece, not a piece that looks super digital or that it can be purchased at a department store. When you receive a piece from The Artsy Boho, you can be assured that you're getting a quality piece that feels and look like the original artwork itself.
