About

Boxes for GUYS, no bows, no wrapping paper no gift bags, just add your favorite beverage!

Bill Wright and I met several years ago while he was raising funds for The Folds of Honor, a military charity that provides scholarships for children of American military service members. Bill was on the steering committee that holds an annual golf outing as a fund raiser for the 501C-3 non-profit and I am a local awards engraving shop owner with a passion for cooking slow-smoked southern style BBQ. Each year I cook pulled pork and serve sandwiches to the golfers that participate in the fundraiser thus fulfilling both our passions. Over the years we worked together on various other fundraisers for local non-profits and became jokingly known as “Bill Squared” to everyone we work with.

One evening while attending a marketing meeting for one of the non-profits at our local micro-brewery the discussion turned to the possibility that “Bill Squared” should turn its creativity and marketing skills into an idea that could financially benefit the two Bills as much as they had benefited the non-profits. The concept was simple, “If we can raise tens of thousands of dollars for these non-profits every year maybe we should think about doing something for ourselves.” Bill Wright remarked that we should “Think outside the box” for an idea, to which my reply was “Actually, we should think ABOUT the “BOX”. I had been researching and designing a laser cut box jointed concept for gift boxes for several years but lacked the marketing expertise to go along with the design and production capacities I had in my shop. As we sat and contemplated the possibilities over a mug of our favorite Porter the decision was made that has lead us to start The BoxWorx.

The following day I showed Bill the concept I had been working on. My idea was to utilize the precision of my industrial laser to cut the Baltic Birch plywood into the components necessary to make the boxes. I had done several preliminary designs and pre-production samples that I re-created for Bill to see. He and I spent the next several weeks thinking of what type of boxes, how many box designs we would need to launch a product line, who we would market them to and how we would market them. We both agreed that “branding” was a key element to the success of the project so I set about creating the “BoxWorx” logo and securing a domain for a website. It had to not only be simple in design but also convey what The BoxWorx was as a company. We met with some of our close friends who also enjoyed a trip to the local micro-brewery and discussed our concept. The consensus was that if we concentrated on boxes to hold all things beer, wine or spirits that we would be targeting a market segment that would understand the quality of our product and also embrace the use of the product.

In other words, Guys don’t do gift wrapping, gift paper and bows so a “Gift Box” that had the “guy look and feel” would be an attractive idea for most of our friends and contemporaries. We had to design a product that would be attractive to the women in our lives since they normally make the buying decisions that we take credit for.

We have designed the boxes with laser-cut box joints, shelves for engraved glassware to hang from or sit on, a handle to make the carrying easier and a self-sealing and locking door on the front for the personalization that is relevant to the gift. It is our desire to make our customers as proud of the “packaging” as the “gift”. Boxes can be designed for virtually any type of gift with or without engraved glassware.

Each box is laser-cut from a sheet of Premium quality Baltic Birch plywood for precision joint fit, hand sanded, personalized with laser engraved artwork, logos or photographs that have been converted to pencil line art and hand assembled. The glassware is also personalized to the customer’s specifications. We have spent the first 4 months of 2015 designing, testing, refining and demonstrating our box concept to micro-breweries, micro-distilleries, beer, wine and spirit tastings and the customers of my awards and engraving shop and are ready to launch our on-line storefront through Etsy. We ask that you look at our “Made in America” products, contact us with your thoughts and consider purchasing our product so you can see the quality we are building into every box here at The BoxWorx.
