5 out of 5 starsBeautiful creation, both what the beavers made and what you made that into! You did an awesome job of making this into a bowl while still keeping all the important characteristics of the beaver engineering process. Wonderful work and quite a conversation piece. Thank you so much!

5 out of 5 starsThe origins [source of the wood] of this piece sounded intriguing - roots of a storm downed tree [I think]. The wood species - an heavy, dense ironwood - equally so. The appearance in photos only added to that mystery - rough, dark outer bark skin and creamy smooth interior. What would result? Well, in the hands of someone who understood and respected that combination, a most wonderful and satisfying object....a bowl that could not just be looked at but one that demanded it be picked up and touched. The results are exceptionally remarkable. While the appearance may be a bit unbridled, the feel is amazing with the smoothest interior surface imaginable, more akin to marble than wood. I'll be after more so better hurry!

5 out of 5 starsI had seen Karl’s work and had this idea, but I really wanted a piece from “home”. Karl graciously agreed to use a beaver-chewed piece I harvested myself which was chewed on both ends, so he made it into 2 separate fireplace match holders. They’re perfect conversation pieces. So, I bought both - one for my home and one for a gift. Great experience all around. Thanks, Karl!

About "The Chewed Stick"
I've been working in various crafts and art fields for most of my life. Lately I've found my greatest joy is in creating objects in wood that emphasize the beauty of wood in its natural forms. And to my eye, some of the most beautiful and charming forms of wood to be found in nature are those that have been "worked on" by beavers. The stumps of trees felled by beavers, logs and branches with beaver chew-marks or with their bark gnawed off by beavers, and sticks with the characteristic cut ends left by beavers.
I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a good population of beavers, and so I started using their "artifacts" in various woodworking projects.
Not everything I sell is made from beaver-modified wood. But it's always my goal to put the focus on the natural origins and natural beauty of whatever wood I'm working with. When I'm working I place huge importance on the quality of my craftsmanship, but in the end I want nature to be the real star of the show. I feel like my job as a craftsman is to reveal some of the hidden beauties of nature.
On request, I can provide a "note of authenticity" that explains the origin, making and materials of any of the items I sell. This will be particularly useful if you're giving one of my products as a gift. To request this, just use the "Add a note to TheChewedStick" box after adding the item to your shopping cart.
