Announcement    Welcome to The Painted Message! Featuring my shamanic practice guided imagery artwork, handmade shamanic tools, small scale works, mixed media experiments, some prints and other nature based handmade items from my studio. Please check out my website for other large scale original paintings, drawings and exhibition info.

Artist and naturalist, Emily Christenson grew up with a mother who was an abstract artist and a State Park as her backyard. She spent her childhood exploring the forests outdoors and a variety of art materials in her mother’s studio. She graduated in 2002 with a double major in drawing and painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, MN. She has exhibited her paintings, drawings, and photographs nationally and internationally in numerous galleries, art centers and museums in Washington, DC, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Ireland. She has received two merit award grants and her work is in many public and private collections including Delucchi +, Washington, DC, Bellcomb Technologies, Minneapolis, MN, and the Dubuque Museum of Art. She was co-owner and Gallery Director of renee grae gallery, as well as an ongoing instructor of both adults and children at the Figge Art Museum. She is a shamanic practitioner, married, with two boys, living on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota where she maintains her shamanic practice and painting studio.

Building on Emily Christenson’s fifteen years of working directly with the Earth and natural world in her artwork, the Painted Message is a series of ongoing mixed media paintings made for personal healing. Through a shamanic journey Emily is guided into imagery and symbolism that becomes translated into messages and visual language. She uses this imagery to create your unique descriptive painting as a record of these messages to be used for personal healing and growth.

Shamanic healing methods have been documented for tens of thousands of years, and are still practiced worldwide by both indgenous peoples and those who are called to do this work. In shamanic practice the aspect of illness is addressed through the idea that there is disharmony in a person’s life on a spiritual level. By making a shamanic journey outside of time and space into what is called “non-ordinary reality” or a universe parallel to our own, the shaman is met by spirit helpers in the form of human teachers or animals. It is actually these compassionate spirits who perform the healing work though the shaman who is only acting as a conduit.

Through her journeys, Emily Christenson opens a window by making a painting where you may receive messages for both long-term and present time healing and direction. Through mark-making, visual imagery and automatic writings she passes along these painted messages and written words for your interpretation to understand and grow in a personal healing piece of artwork.
