ABOUT:
The Cozy Casita was created out of a need to find comfort and sanity in a harsh world. We all need to find or create or give coziness. Coziness creates a respite and helps us recharge and connect so we can bring our best to ourselves and our loved ones. All cultures around the world have their own ways of creating cozy spaces and experiences. Its a universal need that connects us all no matter in the worst or best of times. In fact, the harder the times, the more we need it. Let me help you bring your vision of cozy to life.

All decor is designed by me and handmade in Southern California by me and my cousin, Vince. I source the handpainted and handcrafted tile from various traditional artisans in Mexico via here in East LA and throughout the Southwest. I am a hunter and gatherer of talavera!

CUSTOM ORDERS:
Let's collaborate to design and choose a color scheme to complement your decor! I work hard to make your vision come to life. With custom orders, I usually go back and forth with customers many times to ensure the tiles are perfect. I also can accommodate large orders for businesses, corporate clients, big events, etc.

ETSY CONVO: Send me a message via the ETSY conversation feature for any questions or custom order request! I respond within 24 hours, but usually within a few hours.

IMPORTANT INFO BEFORE PURCHASING:
As Mexican Talavera tiles are all hand-painted and hand-cut by artisans as opposed to factory cut and stamped, there are variations in size, color, pattern, and any ‘flaws’ are inherent in the tile. Customer satisfaction and happiness is my primary concern so please message me via the Etsy convo feature. Also, as the tiles are all handmade, there may be minor variations in the color and pattern of the tiles in the trays you receive versus those in the photos.

Also, I do my best to accurately photograph all trays and boxes. There may be some slight color variation between the image and actual item due to fluctuations in lighting and difference in monitors between users. Also, I usually photograph all trays in natural daylight (near a large window) and don't use a flash.

HISTORY:
Each tile is hand-painted and hand-cut by master artisans in Mexico, thus each tile is unique, using a method passed down for centuries, originally brought over by the Spanish (learned from Arabic artisans) in the 1500s. Mexican Talavera tiles (made from earthen clay, fired, glazed, painted, and then fired again) are a connection to history, while bringing a modern and colorful flair to your home.

We also offer other custom items made with Talavera tile, including mailboxes, trivets, coasters, bookends, and tile table runners!

Tiles are handpainted and handmade in Mexico. All decor is designed, handmade by me in sunny Southern California! My commitment with The Cozy Casita is to offer high-quality, handmade home decor and our number one priority is customer service and provide a positive buying experiencing, whether you want something you see in the store or if you have a personal vision in your mind that we work together to bring to life!

My Story:
I bought my first Talavera tile in Arizona at a country store in 2014. I was on a soul searching road trip through the desert trying to find some peace after going through my second bout of cancer, the first as a 4-year old child, the second as a 37-year old woman. I meandered and was determined to follow my heart and have an adventure. I love going into little mom and pop country stores, especially throughout my homeland of the Southwest US (born in Southern Cali but my mom's family has roots in New Mexico), and I stopped on a roadside store and saw they had tons of Talavera tile on clearance. I fell in love with patterns and colors and look of the tile, and the feeling of history and culture they carried in them. And being clay ceramic, they were also a connection to the earth. I was feeling that! Of course I bought a dozen not having any idea what I would do or make with them!

After that trip, I went back to my fancy music industry job in Santa Monica, where I had been for the past 10 years, and become less and less happy in that space. I didn't touch those tiles for at least another year. In 2015, I made my first trays and gave them as mother's days gifts to my mom and my boyfriend's mom. They loved them! I found some local suppliers of Talavera tiles and bought some more, thinking that Christmas was coming and I needed to make some gifts. Then in September of 2015, I quit my day job. Not too prudently either. I had no real plan, but I knew it was time to go. Though after 10 years, I would miss my lifetime friends I made, and the biweekly paycheck was sure comfy, my soul wasn't happy there and I knew full well that life was short. I had also lost my dad within that 10 years.

I trusted in the goodness and guidance of the Universe and my Higher Power that my path would make itself clear. With a background in public health and a talent for project management and computer savvy, I thought I'd perhaps pursue a job that involved social good and/or tech. But life had another plan!

By Christmas of 2015, I had made several more trays, posted on social media, and had many friends and family wanting to buy them from me! It was a huge aha. I decided to break out of my comfort zone and list a few on Etsy. At first, my sales were just friends and family, but then when I got my first order from a stranger, I was in awe!

I realize now almost a year after leaving my music industry job that I have come full circle. When I was 4 years old and a cancer in-patient at Children's Hospital of LA, the highlight of my day was going to the craft room. It was just a time where you lost yourself in possibility and color and expression. You weren't a sick kid anymore, you were just another child tapping into the magic of creativity. Then almost 35 years later, it was creativity again that saved my soul after going through breast cancer, a double mastectomy, and all the emotional trauma and grief that came along with it.

Through The Cozy Casita, I have also rediscovered my love of culture and history, working with Talavera tile, which has such a rich and ancient history and journey. The art of decorative Talavera ceramic glazed tile has traveled thousands of years through Africa, the Middle East, Italy, Spain, and Mexico. And it is made from clay from earth and hand painted and hand cut by native artisans. Working with this tile and learning all the tools and skills of the trade has been an amazing journey. Learning techniques of cutting tile, using power tools, grouting, wood staining, etc has been beyond fun. Luckily, my stepdad is a master carpenter with over 50 years of experience as one of the best.

My inspirations include nature, all things brightly colored, Chicano/Latino culture, surfing and coastal living, and making things that fit people's personalities and personal decor. I love doing custom orders and bring to life my customer's vision. I also love just experimenting and coming up with new designs.

In the next year, I plan to add more and more offerings to my store. Please follow my store and my social media pages to keep up to date on all the latest happenings and for colorful inspiration for home and life!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I love doing custom orders! In fact, about half of my orders are custom. I work with you to find out your color scheme and design aesthetic and will email you various ideas for you to choose from. I will keep looking until you have your vision manifested. I also can customize the tray color as well. I can paint the wood or I can stain it darker. I can't guarantee the colors will be an exact replica, but I will do my best!

Gift wrapping and packaging

I will more than gladly gift wrap your order and add a personalized note to the recipient. I have sent gifts for mother's days and weddings!

Sizing details

I have listed the dimensions of the trays on each listing and there are several pictures in each listing with items that show the scale of the products. Let me know if you need more exact info!

Wholesale availability

Please email for wholesale or large order inquiries! We have the capability to do large scale orders. With orders of over 100 trays, we need a significant lead time, however, at least 5-6 months due to sourcing of the materials, which are handmade, and then handmaking each item.

Care instructions

HOW TO CARE FOR PRODUCT:
• Not for outside use unless brought back in at night. Do not allow the wood to sit in water or it will eventually damage the finish and even wood. The grout is waterproofed with a sealant however, and can just be wiped clean.
• Items are sealed and should bead off water, but please do not wash in a full sink of water or dishwasher.
• Harsh cleansers may scratch, dry, or damage the tile.
• Use a microfiber cloth and gentle soap and water to clean. The microfiber will make your tiles shine.
• You can use mineral oil (such as that for cutting boards) to buff clean the wood. Apply lightly with a cloth and let sit for a few minutes, and then remove any excess oil from the wood. It will soak up the oil and look brand
