About

Cannot keep me out of the buckets

I've been a quilter for close to twenty years now and have the gray hair to prove it. I've always gravitated to solid colors...the more shades, tints and hues, the better. I like the purity of effect I can attain with "just" color. Amish and Mennonite quilts absolutely scream at me!
About six years ago, I flew back east to spend a full week with Joan Skalbeck, the late, great owner of Primrose Gradations. Joan's was one of those booths at quilt shows where you spent waaaaay too much money. I learned she gave dye workshops and so I enrolled...and spent an entire week happily sloshing around in 5 gallon buckets and rubber gloves. I went with no fabric...I came home with 61 yards.
Joan, sadly, left us a couple of years ago, and Primrose Gradations was suddenly no more. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE Cherrywood fabrics...but they're just not the same. No one could take two colors and explore what lay between like Joan. And so, many years later, I started doing what she did, for my own enjoyment.
Now, as I approach retirement, I have a bit more time to spend in the buckets. True, I'll never get rich, but hey...you can't beat doing what you love! I hope to share this love of color with you through my hand dyes.

The process: Two Procion dye colors, 8 5-gallon buckets, salt and soda ash...that's about it. I run my colors and do the soaking for about 90 minutes. The fabric is then washed in warm water with Synthrapol. I don't trim the finished pieces, but they are ironed and have no gobs of fray hanging off. Should you wash them again when you get them? Up to you! You don't need to.
