5 out of 5 starsThis particular collar works very well for my dogs sensitive neck and chest area. I’m able to keep their ID tags on and they are comfortable in the meantime. They are chipped of course, but I’d rather someone read their tags and contact me right away than wait to find a vet to read it. I go nowhere else now because the quality and selection are always great. Lara is always a pleasure to deal with and I’ve always been satisfied.

A dog and a sewing machine
By day I'm a Communications Specialist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, but when you mix a passion for the creative with an affinity for crafts and textiles, and a love for animals, The Eclectic Hound simply cannot be stopped!
When my husband, Logan, and I first adopted our retired racing greyhound, the first order of business was to find her a new stylish collar to begin her life as a pampered member of the family. Ok, actually, the first order of business was finding her a new name! Her racing name, "Invoice," didn't exactly roll off the tongue in a flattering way and I probably wouldn't be interested in running fast if that were my name either... Being an editor and an English teacher by profession, English majors by education, and literature lovers by nature, we decided we needed a literary name, tossed around a few ideas, and landed on "Phoebe," who is Holden Caulfield's little sister in Catcher in the Rye.
Ok, NOW it was time to find her a collar. Phoebe had never been loved or doted on at the track so I think I was trying to make up for lost time when I ended up with an Excel spreadsheet (seriously) of all the collar possibilities I had found for her. Yet, everything I found just wasn't EXACTLY right. I figured the only way to get just what I wanted was to do it myself. So hours of online browsing for ribbon, fabric, webbing, and supplies, and a few more hours of trial and error at my sewing machine later, Phoebe had the perfect collar :).
However, in the process of deciding on materials for Phoebe, I also found hundreds of other fabrics and materials I absolutely had to get my hands on and CREATE.
Unfortunately, Phoebe didn't need a closet full of collars (well, that's up for debate), so, that's where you come in! I listened to that creative calling, but just rerouted it a bit by opening up shop to outfit the 4-legged loves of your lives instead!
Every item I make is one I would love to keep for myself. I send them away to you with love and a little piece of Phoebe and me. I donate a portion of my proceeds and all the merchandise I can to animal rescues, humane societies, foster organizations and greyhound adoption agencies, and that's what makes me so happy to send away my creations. I've been able to not only satisfy my creative need, but help animals, and what better thing is there?! I'm also a proud member of Etsy's Handmade4Hounds shop, which donates 100% of its proceeds to a different greyhound charity each month.
Update: In the summer of 2013, we devastatingly and unexpectedly lost sweet Phoebe to lymphoma at the age of 11. Though I miss her every day, her spirit is still with me and she is still and will forever be my inspiration for The Eclectic Hound.
----About my shop name----
It is merely an excuse to not box myself in to one style. I never know when inspiraton will hit and you'll never know what will pop up in my shop next! I take the "eclectic" part of my name very seriously... ;-).
Thanks for stopping by!

Care instructions
Collars are washable! I recommend hand washing them in a sink of warm soapy water, rinsing well, gently squeezing the water out (no ringing or twisting please!) and setting the collar on its edge on a folded towel for 24 hours to best hold its shape while drying.
You can use a washing machine, but I recommend putting the collar in a laundry bag or sock first to protect the hardware and the inside of your machine. DO NOT machine dry (the webbing could warp or melt).
What is a martingale collar?
Martingales were originally designed for sight hounds, such as greyhounds, whose heads are smaller than their necks and can easily slip traditional buckle collars, but are becoming increasingly popular for all breeds.
Martingales are made up of two pieces: the back strap which contains the size adjuster slide and the martingale loop, which functions by gently tightening around the dog’s neck when pressure is applied to the leash, so the dog can’t back out of the collar. Once pressure is released, the collar relaxes back to its resting position.
Martingales don't open and close but rather are put on and removed by sliding over the dog’s head, then adjusting it down to neck size.
Please contact me for further info about martingales! :)
Sizing details
Collars are adjustable up to several inches. If you’re not sure what size to order, please include your dog’s neck measurement (and head circumference measurement for martingales) in your order and I’ll create a perfectly fitting collar just for him or her.
SMALL: Expands from 10-13 inches
MEDIUM: Expands from 13-16 inches
LARGE: Expands from 16-19 inches
X-LARGE: Expands from 19-22 inches
X-SMALL (8-10") and XX-Large (22-25") are also available upon request. If your dog is in between sizes order up one size for a martingale since it will need to be large enough to slide over your dog's head without hurting him. For a buckle collar, include your dog's neck measurement in the "Note to Seller" box and I'll custom make an in-between size.
Can I send you my own fabric?
YES! If you have special fabric in hand, or find fabric online that would be just perfect for your baby, I'm more than happy to custom make a collar out of it.
You can either mail the fabric to me, or if it's available online, I'll set up a custom listing for you and order the fabric myself.
Please contact me for a list of my favorite online fabric shops or for help finding the PERFECT design for your baby!
