Announcement   WELCOME TO MY WORLD! ...a world where it is forever somewhere between 1910 and 1960, the world of Downton Abbey, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and the House of Eliott, of Fred and Ginger, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, and Doris Day... Think of it as a vintage department store (although I'm not quite 'Mr Selfridge'!) of things I have designed, made, or sourced and gathered together under one roof for you to buy.

I am an Artist-Designer and I sell Original & Reproduction Art & Design, Fashion, Books & Ephemera, and Home Accessories, 1900 - 1964, which I've tried to list in sections that will help you whether you know exactly what you are looking for, or whether you'd like to just browse and experience a bit of social history - like exploring themed rooms in a museum, to make it just a bit entertaining and informative.

This carefully curated Emporium is not just my shop - it is your ticket to another country called The Past: so climb aboard the Orient Express with me and come Time Travelling!

Thankyou, and, 'Bon voyage'!

About

Painting The Clouds With Sunshine...

'Painting The Clouds With Sunshine' is the title of a popular song from 1929, the start of the Great Depression.

Back in 2002, my whole life seemed to have come crashing down about my ears.

Trying to find a way forward that would use everything I had at my disposal, I dreamed of having a shop where I could live, work, and sell my work. I immediately knew I would call it 'Painting The Clouds With Sunshine', which perfectly summed up my situation, if you know the song.

That did not materialise.

Far better things did though. Just not in the form or at the time I'd visualised.

And then... in 2011, I discovered Etsy. And now I have my shop... where I do live, work, and sell my work...

"Though things may not look bright, they'll all turn out alright, if I keep painting the clouds with sunshine..."

Welcome to Painting The Clouds With Sunshine!

I have loved the 1920s, '30s and '40s ever since I can remember, and have just got more and more fascinated by all aspects of life in that era the more I have learned -'learned' both academically, experientially, and through practise.

The more I learn about the period, the more I want to know - and the same is true of my applied creative skills and the work I produce.

This is why I take a deeply personal interest in the items I sell, and even more so in the items I make myself - they are part of me; and that is why it gives me special pleasure when I know they have gone to a good home, to a person who truly appreciates them and will love them. So if after purchasing from me you feel inclined to send me any message to this effect, it will be appreciated and I am happy to enter into communication.

BY PLACING AN ORDER WITH ME, YOU ARE AGREEING TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS:

Accepted payment methods

  • Pay with Visa
  • Pay with Master Card
  • Pay with American Express
  • Pay with Discover
  • Pay with PayPal
  • Buy with Apple Pay
  • Pay with Sofort
  • Pay with iDeal
  • Accepts Etsy gift cards

  • Other Method
Payment
I accept payment by Paypal. I will accept payment by cheque if drawn on a UK bank. If you use this method of payment, I will require the cheque to clear before despatching your purchase. I can accept credit cards only through Etsy's direct checkout system.

I ship all items with a full declaration of the total purchase price; any and all customs, duties and taxes payable upon arrival of the piece within the home territory of the purchasor are the full responsibility of the purchasor.

If you are within the EU, you have the right to a fourteen day cancellation period of your order. In such an event, or that of a return, where a refund is involved, you will be liable for the return shipping costs if the item has already been sent to you.
Shipping
Items will be shipped within 3-5 working days of your payment clearing, by regular second class mail in the UK, or airmail elsewhere. Shipping time will then be subject to standard practise or prevailing conditions of your and my country's mail service, which is beyond my control; but expected delivery should be within one to four weeks of purchase for international destinations and within one week in the UK, as a rough guide, usually less than this though.

Should you want express delivery or any other kind of special delivery, insurance, signing-for, tracking etc., I will gladly arrange this, for a further charge. Please ask me about this before ordering.

If you want an item delivered to an address other than the one on your account (which is the one I receive automatically with your order), I am happy to arrange this if you tell me at the time of ordering. If it is not in your own country, a different shipping charge will apply.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to keep costs down for you I quote and will use minimum shipping rates unless otherwise requested, as postage charges are now very high. Royal Mail is reliable, excellent and fast, but obviously it is not impossible for delays or damage to occur and on rare occasions, for an item to go missing - please note, this is extremely rare, and is beyond my control and I accept no liability for such occurrences, and I am also not able to do anything about the mail service in your country. In such instances, it may be possible to recover shipping costs and possibly part or all of the value of the item, but there is no guarantee of this. I do not use Royal Mail Tracking on your shipping unless you request it, since this STARTS at a further £5-50 (UK) and £12-50 (abroad) on top of quoted shipping price and increases with weight and destination.

PLEASE NOTE: PURCHASING TRACKING OR INSURANCE IS THE ONLY WAY TO 100% GUARANTEE RECEIVING A REFUND IF YOUR ITEM IS NOT DELIVERED OR ARRIVES DAMAGED. If you want this option, please ask me before ordering, and I will be happy to calculate a quote for you based on the size, weight and destination of your item.

If you wish to have your purchase specially insured in any way for shipping regarding guaranteed delivery time or to cover damage, please ask and I will arrange this. This will incur a further charge however. Please feel free to ask in advance and I will let you know how much, and then you can decide.

Please note I use recycled packaging for shipping to keep costs down. Packages may therefore not look very pretty, but they will be suitable for the item and its protection. Rest assured however, that years of experience in the antiques trade and packing up my own home four times for overseas shipping means I am extremely thorough in packing all items very well for their protection - please see some of the feedback satisfied customers have left me to this effect!
Refunds and Exchanges
Within the European Union:

If for any reason the purchased item is not suitable, I offer a full refund service if the following procedure is fulfilled by the purchasor:
■ The purchasor contacts me to notify of their intent to return within 14 days of receipt of the goods.
■ The goods are returned via registered, trackable postal services that require signature upon delivery at my address within 14 days of signed receipt of the goods.
■ If the item is a garment, it is not worn, and is returned in the same condition as it was dispatched, packed within the original packaging.
■ Once the item has been received by me and it is confirmed that it is in the same condition as when it was initially dispatched and within the original box, a full refund will be issued.
■ If the above criteria are not met, a refund will not be issued upon the item.

Outside of the European Union / Rest of World:

I do not have a blanket returns policy, since every item and every situation, is unique, so returns/refunds are subject to my discretion. I do my best to describe my products and goods - and their condition - accurately and to give you as much information as I can about an item, its size etc, to enable you to make an informed choice when you purchase, and I do everything I can to ensure goods reach you in the same condition in which they left me. So please remember it is a two-way process and it is your responsibility to check beforehand the things that are important to you in the item before you purchase: goods such as I sell are always 'as found' - hence my policy of describing them in great detail to help you. Ultimately though, you must be aware that you are buying either vintage or handmade items, which therefore have wear, defects, or irregularities; and however conscientious I may be in scrutinising and describing the condition of an object, it is possible that I may overlook something minor. This would not constitute grounds for a refund. This is the meaning of 'as found' with secondhand goods. In the absence of being able to inspect and handle the item, it is your responsibility to ask me any questions you may need to know in this respect.

In particular, please take note of the measurements I list of items of clothing, which I do because vintage sizes can differ considerably from their modern equivalent bearing the same numerical description, as well as the range of actual sizes that exist within a stated size even in modern sizing codes.

So please ask as many questions as you need before making a purchase, as Etsy provides this excellent facility for messaging for us. Thankyou.

I will consider a refund, at my discretion, if the following procedure is fulfilled by the buyer:

■ The purchasor contacts me to notify the intent to return within 4 working days of (signed - if appropriate) receipt of the goods.
■ The goods are returned via registered, trackable postal services that require signature upon delivery at my address within 12 days of the original (signed) receipt of the goods, at the buyer's expense.
■ Any garment is not worn, is returned in the same condition as it was dispatched, packed within the original packing.
■ Once the item has been received by The Glamourist and it is confirmed the garment/item is in the same condition as when it was initially dispatched and within the original box, a full refund will be authorised.
■ The cost of any duties, taxes and customs incurred upon the return of the goods will be deducted from the purchase price and a refund of the balance will be issued.
■ If the above criteria are not met, a refund will not be issued upon the item.

PLEASE NOTE: UNLESS YOU HAVE PURCHASED TRACKING OR INSURANCE I regret I cannot refund for damages or loss incurred in the course of shipping, nor for late or non-delivery, beyond what may be recoverable from the delivery service in question as standard. In the case of the Royal Mail, this will be simply a refund of the cost of postage if non-delivery is the problem, or up to a value of £50 in the event of damage. Although there is no guarantee, being acutely aware of this however, I will always do my utmost to ensure items are thoroughly protected to withstand the rigours of shipping and am very experienced in this respect (see above under 'delivery'). I will also always ship your item the same day or next day after receiving your order.

Anything that happens after that is beyond my control, and for which I bear no liability.
Additional policies and FAQs
Wherever possible in my own creations, I use original vintage or antique materials to achieve my high degree of authenticity. This does mean that there may sometimes be what you might consider flaws that would not be present on a brand new, modern-manufactured, machine-made item. Naturally I strive for as near-perfection of finish as can be achieved, but it is this recycling of materials that gives my creations their particular look, such that customers sometimes mistake them for originals from the period - which is what I am setting out to achieve.

Likewise, please be aware that other goods I sell are original vintage or antique, are sold 'as found', and therefore bear the marks of wear - this is one of the things that adds to their appeal, it is part of their history and charm, so please do not expect them to be perfect unless described as such. I will always describe any damage, wear or defects as accurately as I can to avoid disappointment for you.

Please do not hesitate to ask me if you need further details about any item, such as sleeve length, condition, etc.

I am always open to custom orders.

Oh - and by the way: please take note of what I have written in my 'Favourite Materials': it is neither fanciful nor facetious nor some empty marketing hype - I mean it. I pride myself on excellent customer service, quality, courtesy, and if you approach me in a polite, friendly and respectful way, I will go out of my way to give you the most excellent old-fashioned service you have ever received - take a look at my feedbacks and website if you doubt this. But if you want to know or discuss something and cannot be bothered to address me with more than just 'Hi' - or worse, no form of address at all - nor sign off with your name so I know who I am talking to and can therefore address you courteously by name, you will receive no reply from me: my name is clearly visible on every page of my shop, please use it - I do not agree with the anonymity of the internet that too many people hide behind with no good reason, and I have plenty of Real and well-mannered people - friends and clients - both in the real world and online, who need and deserve my time (not to mention serious commission work outside fo Etsy), to need to put up with such rudeness.

This courtesy is the least we owe each other: let's preserve not just the beauty of Vintage looks and the personal artisan crafts, but of Vintage Manners too.

I truly look forward to being of service to you.

Yours most sincerely,

Martin Faulkner,
'The Glamourist' - Painting The Clouds With Sunshine
