How the Gear Became Gold

The craziest gift I ever received was a casting centrifuge and all the tools, books, and supplies that I needed to start my jewelry business.

I answered an ad on freecycle a couple months after i'd been laid off. She just kept bringing out the boxes of her mothers jewelry making things. I have never felt so blessed.

This womans gift has changed everything about my life and how I plan to live it. Since that day, I've been happier and more positive than I've been in my whole life. A total stranger gave me back my creative mojo and the tools to start my new life!

This is how my little store opened. I'm still mostly only casting the original screw earrings that I first made when I got my mojo back but i've since added lots of other neat things that I make.

    Ilana is a Silicon Valley native and life-long artist with a love for creative materials use. As a long time costumer, steampunk, and prop builder, she has worked with many materials and techniques that round out an eclectic array of creations.

    Supervisor

    Stan Lee supervises our every move. You may find his seal of approval stuck to your package as he inspects every item that leaves the shop. We rescued Stan Lee (shelter named Stanley - but he has a little white cameo around his neck!) in late 2015.

  • Pudge

    Supervisor

    Pudge is our secondary supervisor. Mostly he looks disapprovingly at us while we work when it interferes with his daily viewing of the bird feeder. Pudge is a British Shorthair that we rescued in late 2015. He is 2 years old.

  • Banjo Bam Bam LoPan Wiggly Noodle

    Shredder

    Banjo's primary role is to devour all boxes that come into the shop. You will know him by the stripey hairs stuck in random places on every order. We rescued this little Bengal in 2020. Heaven help us.

Hi! The Golden Gear is made up of us: Dennis and Ilana Murray. We love to design and make things that make people happy. We have both been designers and makers in our personal and professional lives and, after getting laid off from our high-tech jobs, decided it was time to go full time with our dreams and make cool things for a living

The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)

If, for any reason, your item is defective, we will gladly exchange/replace it at no additional costs to you. Please email photos of the defect prior to returning the item and we will provide you with return information.

Exchanges apply to leather patches and pewter items only.If you want to exchange your item for other reasons such as you ordered the wrong size/color/design or it doesn't suit your needs, a 50% restocking fee will be charged as each one is made custom to your specifications. Returned items must be in unused clean brand new unworn condition to receive your partial refund.

Tshirts and coffee mugs are not refundable as they are made one at a time and are completely custom.

Orders with customer provided artwork can not be returned/exchanged. We do our best to let you know what your items will look like, verify your order and may even refuse custom work if the artwork will not provide good results.

We do not ship without confirmed payment, sorry for the inconvenience.
Shipping
Shipping

We ship via USPS for all orders. When available, tracking numbers are supplied when the order is shipped. Orders are processed as quickly as we can get to them.

We are not responsible for items lost by postal carriers. We do our best to get your packages delivered to the post office in a timely manner but we have no control over bad postal training, dishonest postal carriers, porch thieves, nosey neighbors, unsupervised children, vandals or vindictive ex's (yes, all of these things have been reported in the past).

International Shipping

Sorry, due to repeated problems with Canadian customs, this shop no longer ships outside the USA.
Additional policies and FAQs
Order Fullfillment and Cancellations

We start working on your order when payment is received or shortly thereafter. If you need to cancel your order, please do it as quickly as possible. If we have not started work on your order, you may be able to get a full refund. If we have already started working on your order, we will try to give you as much of a refund as possible but we do need to cover our expenses. Paypal will charge us if you make a transaction, even if you cancel it promptly. This expense will be taken out of your refund.

While we keep a fairly large inventory in the shop, we sometimes have to order shirts or other supplies that may cause delays in order delivery. Please order well in advance of special events or gift giving holidays to account for unforeseen delays.
