[REVISED FEEDBACK: The original review that follows did not reflect unforeseen, adverse circumstances (for shop owner) that caused the unusual delay.] Really a beautiful, well-crafted item, but it wasn't shipped in a timely manner. I ordered 3 mo in advance of my BFFs due date, and it wasn't shipped until a few days before she delivered (ordered March 3; shipped May 12)--so not BAD, but longer than what I'd read re: turn around date. I know baby won't use them for a while, but they're a lovely decoration for the nursery till she can. Shop owner said they were nearly finished, but they shipped several wks (2 wks?) later, according to Etsy. This may have been a tech glitch, but makes me sad because it's truly such a beautifully made treasure. Do order FAR in advance. But also expect a unique work of art.

About

When a little mountain girl with a sewing machine and a compulsive need to have every color thread in existence starts a business.

Everything I make contains a seed. A little kernel of inspiration to share, in hopes it will blossom into a living, breathing passion. Folks seem to think such seeds can only be dug out and planted by children, or rather, that they can only be dug out for children and planted inside them. But not so. Seeds like these may be planted in all types of soil--even that which has laid fallow for many years.

The seeds come in all shapes and sizes. Some are cosmic, others are literary. Some are abstract, and may grow in any number of directions. Still others are zoological, and may result in abnormal obsessions with rhinos or poison dart frogs (don't worry...the only abnormal part is the amount of awesome they bring to everyday conversation). Of course, when they are all stored in the same packet, you will notice that they may start taking on each others' qualities as they are cultivated. So that one seed that started off as a counting tree, may grow into a completely unplanned desire to read a fairytale, which will lead to more fairytales. This, in turn may lead to the need for some history, which could be moderately fascinating, if it is given a spot with lots of sun and gets plenty of water. You get the idea. Think "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," but with learning.

I certainly don't have the monopoly on these kinds of seeds, or the objects that carry them. They are everywhere, all around you, and are pretty much infinite in their possibilities. But I hope that something you see here, in this little corner of the handmade world, will tug that little chord inside of you that hasn't rung since you were a kid.

Every object you see in my shop is completely handmade by me with earth-friendly materials, and ready to take on whatever life they are chosen for. Whether the life will be up on your bookshelf, in a classroom, or in a nature table, one thing I do hope is that my creations, in their completed states will nurture at least a few little sprouts of inspiration that will grow into a forest, full of twisty oak trees and secret paths waiting to be explored. I think an old friend from one of my favorite stories said it best:

"The best thing for being sad is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails...the only thing the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."
-Merlin, from T.H. White's "The Once and Future King"

Additional policies and FAQs
TOY AND LEARNING TOOL SAFETY

As stated above, all of the items I make are crafted to the best of my abilities, but please be aware of the risks of purchasing handmade toys. They have not passed any official federal safety tests, and are not made with hypo allergenic materials. As a teacher, I understand the risks in giving any toy to children, but I do ask that you use common sense when purchasing anything from my shop. Here are some specs to help gauge what toys are appropriate for specific age levels and needs:

1) All items are crafted with natural wool and/or organic cotton. If your child has a wool allergy, I would be happy to create something for you using exclusively cotton. Material contents and care instructions are included with the item AND in the item's listing. If you have any questions about material content, let me know!

2) All of the counting and sorting Montessori works include removable magnetic parts, and present a choking hazard to very young children. All magnets are glued, and then sewn into the materials, so they will not come out easily! However, the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) requires me to include warnings on magnetic items for children. I generally recommend using these items for children 6 and up. Any younger, constant adult supervision is strongly advised.

3) All items are created in a smoke-free environment. I do have a cat and a dog. All items are carefully brushed and checked for the errant animal hair before packaging (they don't come in direct content with my materials, so any instance of this is a rarity). If you or your child is SEVERELY allergic to microscopic pet dander, it may not be the best idea to purchase toys from my shop.

4) All painted items use AP certified non-toxic paint, and are heat set, so the paint won't rub off. I can't make any guarantees about what will happen if your child puts them in their mouth, so it's best to say they are not suitable for children under 5.

Ultimately, use your own judgement when purchasing handmade toys. You know your child better than anyone!

A NOTE ON MADE TO ORDER ITEMS:

I make everything with my own two hands. Although I do use patterns for made to order items, each item is a unique creation with its own quirks and bits of personality. If you are looking for items that are 100% identical to listing photographs, I might recommend that you look at my OOAK items.

REFFERALS

If you have been referred to my shop by a friend or family member I would love to hear about it! They will receive 15% off their next purchase.
