About

Barn to Shop

The studio was not always what it is today. The area where my shop was last used as a three-stall sheep barn. It was in bad repair; dirt floor, rocks sticking out, crumbling foundation, and leaky roof. With help from neighbors and family it became what it is today. With much hard work, we managed to gut the entire place and start from scratch, while maintaining the outside of the barn.
Putting in a floor was the first step, then the walls and ceilings, as well as some new windows. There was no direct way from the outside to the shop as you had to go through another section of barn to get to it. By cutting out a portion of the west wall we were able to insert a double door. Insulation was next, because Vermont winters can be quite cold. The secondhand woodstove keeps my studio warm using scraps, cut-offs and mess-ups from the process of bowl making.

Growing up in the woods definitely shaped my future career choice. Although woodturning was not on the list when I was younger, I knew that I wanted to work with my hands. I enjoy hiking, photography and snow sports.
