About

After 40 years of crafting, Rose the hippy launched The Hippy Rose.

After 40 years of crafting, Allie and Beth (my daughter and her best friend) gave me the push I needed to finally start doing what I love. When I turned 60, I set out to try 60 new things. One of those things was crochet, as despite knitting and sewing for decades, I never managed to master crochet. Eventually I got the hang of it and thought about the 59 other things I could try. That's when Allie and Beth helped me (finally) set up my shop. I'm doing what I love and hopefully it will soon be full time!

As a child, my mum always made me and my twin sister dresses, as you can imagine having twins, she made a lot. I learned a lot of my skills from her, going on to sewing and knitting my own clothes for many years. I then of course did the same for my daughter, filling the school holidays with customising clothes and painting designs onto jeans outside on a summer day. Even if in some years the homemaking was slow, it was always in the background, doing the odd bit of sewing here and there for others, it was revived a few years ago when I became a great aunt. Now I can't escape making things for the kids whenever I see them, with them asking "So what have you made us this time Aunty Rose?". A lot of the time, it includes elephants.

When I was a little girl, I remember my mum having two black elephants which I loved and played with every day. From then on, I was obsessed with elephants. In my first job, I worked with a man from Nigeria, who was holding a raffle. I bought a ticket to help him raise money and ended up winning an elephant table, which is sitting in my sewing room right now, all these years later. Elephants have always been a long standing feature in my life, from the elephant shaped favours holding loose Sri Lankan tea at my nephew's wedding to all the elephant themed jewellery and gifts Allie and Beth have bought me over the years. As you can see, I'm still as obsessed with elephants now as I was when I first played with my mum's elephant book ends, making elephant bags, gifts and bohemian decor whenever I can.
