The Italic Letter is a collection of authentic Italian hand-made marquee sign letters from the 1960s onwards. All of the letters we offer are 100% original, used, in their previous lives, as cinema, store, factory and so on marquee signs all over Italy, often personally removed from their original site by us, cleaned and minimally restored, where necessary, to maintain their original character.
All our letters are of Italian manufacture and provenance. This distinguishes the identity of each letter. Letters sold from our collection are traces of a very specific aesthetic and design culture; an Italian marquee sign letter, you will notice, is quite different to a letter of, for example, French or American provenance of the same period.
All Italian sign letters are handmade by local artisans according to a similar, labour intensive method (in Italy there exists no industrial process for the manufacturing of marquee letters). These letters, in their choice of font, material, colour and finish, exhibit a design sophistication which is intrinsically linked to the Italian design culture of their period (and these can range from the Industrial Utopian dream of the Fiat and Alfa Romeo factories, the playful post-modernism of Ettore Sottsass’s Memphis group, the noble poverty of Enzo Mari, the high baroque of Gianni Versace, to name a few).
All the letters in our shop are selected with the passion of a long-time collector in the field, our criteria of selection incorporate a sensitivity to the charm of vintage objects and the minimal restoration, certification of authenticity and research into exact provenance all reflect this!
