About

Jade - Transcendental Beauty

The Jade Market started as an effort to revitalize the interest behind jade. Jadeite, in its various forms and colors is beautiful. It has a long history in Eastern Asian cultures and over time it has accumulated meaning through the works of skilled artisans using jadeite as a sculpting medium. Today, the natural beauty of jadeite in combination of works by talented artisans form wearable pieces of art. With our curatorial process we are proud to present beautiful, meaningful and wearable pieces of art.

Collections at The Jade Market are beautiful for its natural qualities of jadeite stone. All jadeite sold at The Jade Market are natural jadeite from upper Burma. And only fine jadeite stones are sold. In the process of identifying stones of quality, we evaluate a piece based on its color, translucency, texture, clarity, cut, and size. All jadeite is Grade A and Type A, meaning no treatment has been made with the natural stones except for wax polishing. The colors, lines, and striations one sees are all qualities of the natural jadeite stone.

All pieces at The Jade Market have a special meaning. For centuries, jade and its various carvings have come to represent ideals, values, virtues, stories and religion of East Asian cultures. From Confucius to Emperiors, jade permeated in Chinese history. Today, there are great artisans scattered throughout Asia, with great skill in communicating stories and ideas through sculpting jadeite. At The Jade Market, take a moment to observe the various sections presented. They offer a categorization for the values or ideas that are represented within a section. Pieces have been hand selected within a particular section have historical reference, folklore, or religious ties to the idea behind that particular category section.

Pieces at The Jade Market are fashionable and wearable pieces of art. Each piece has been carved with meticulous attention to detail, animating the spirit of the design. That level of attention has been placed to the practical characteristics of wear-ability. When feeling each piece, one will notice the smoothness from the fine grain effort of polishing that occurs within each piece. Laying on the neck in the form of a necklace pendant, or at the wrist in a bracelet, the pieces are smooth and cool to the touch.

With an eye to beautiful, quality and meaningful jadeite, we have been relentless in collecting pieces that we treasure. Most genuine, Grade A jadeite originates from the mines in upper Burma. From its raw forms, artisans throughout the world gather jadeite stones and begin the carving process. This process is a lengthy journey, which includes filtering stones based on preferences, selecting stones for its use, and envisioning the object to be depicted within the carving of the stone. In its finished state after wax polishing, stones can be sold directly at local jade markets throughout Asia, jade collectives, or other natural gemstone organizations.

We wear jade for many reasons. Some are enamored with its natural beauty, while others take to heart the symbolic meaning of the sculptured work. Through The Jade Market, we hope to showcase and share our passion for jade.
