About

Thanks for stopping!

Welcome to The Laughing Blackbird! I look forward to making you the owner of a fabulous, heirloom quality rag quilt!

My spacious home quilt studio (aka, my tiny third bedroom) is located smack dab in the middle of the Iowa cornfields. I opened this shop in 2011 because I believe in my soul that everyone should have at least one well used, handmade quilt in the linen closet that didn’t cost more than a house payment. I scour fabric shops for unique plaid fabrics to make my quilts comfortable and colorful, without being too chick'ish. These machine washable quilts hold up to kids, pets and men who aren't careful with nice things. They are made with 100% cotton materials because I hate to sleep in synthetic bedding and I think you should hate it, too. I also work exclusively with the old-fashioned Homespun fabrics because they just make a much nicer rag quilt. Sometimes the old way is best.

While I do list ready-to-ship items periodically, the majority of my items are made to order, so you get exactly what you want. I like to think that you're "commissioning" your quilt, since that's what the fancy artists say and it makes us both sound fancy, too. If you're looking for a size or shape that I don't have listed, shoot me a note. I'll make it!

So thanks for stopping by, take a stroll around the shop and please ask questions if you have 'em. And if you do make a purchase and feel so inclined, send me pictures of my quilts out in the real world.

Fabrics are my weakness. I like to look at them and hold them and pet them and fold them. Is that weird?

Sizing details

I want you to have the PERFECT quilt for your bed. I use traditional sizing for my quilts, and they fit the bed similar to a comforter, as opposed to a full bedspread. To insure the exact fit you want, please check the item measurements in the listing against your own bed. If you have an extra deep mattress or thick topper and want your quilt to drape longer on the sides or cover your pillows, you may need to order the next larger sized quilt. Please feel free to convo me with questions and custom size requests!

What Is Homespun Fabric?

Modern homespun fabrics resemble traditional homespun cloth. They are made of natural fibers and include an imperfect finish. Designs are created by weaving colored threads together, rather than printing the design on the fabric as with modern quilting fabrics. Because the pattern is woven rather than printed, Homespuns are only available in plaids, checks or solids. The material tends to fray in a way that better lends itself to rag-style quilts, as opposed to typical calico quilting fabrics which are specifically designed NOT to fray, instead giving a dog-eared effect.
