Creator of Book Beads and Purveyor of Book-themed Charms

My name is Faith and I have been experimenting with polymer clay since 2007, when upon wallowing from a book hangover, I came upon a tutorial that spoke to my inner book geek. Immediately, I saw myself creating miniatures of my favorite books! It took about a year of solid research, experimenting & effort to get it to its current form. And pounds of book bead clay disasters and mistakes.

I come into clay design naturally, having worked with fondant as a Wilton Level 3-certified cake decorator. Polymer clay is a very interesting medium to work with. It is resilient, flexible and forgiving. I knew that I wanted sharp details to show, so I opted for quarter dollar-sized books.

Getting the image on the clay was another matter. Not a stranger to image transfer techniques, I knew that this was going to be a challenge: getting double-sided images onto a book form. Following suggestions from fellow clay artisans, I tried a number of things, but none were full proof. Sometimes it worked. Most of the time it didn't. Just like Edison, I found 2000+ ways of how NOT to place an image onto clay.

In the end, it took a combination of painting, chemistry, physics, baking and lots of patience to pull it off. It was discouraging at times but ultimately, persistence paid off: sharp images permanently baked onto clay. Voila! Book Beads were born.

Once I had them the possibilities were endless! Because it takes SO long to create a book bead (about 3 weeks), I didn't want to slap it on any cheap backdrop. I love the geometry behind weaving chain mail (the mathematician in me), so I located a good supplier for the rings and bam! — Found the perfect background for my book beads.

Pewter charms were a logical next step. They became an offshoot of trying to display more mementos from books I just finished. Other products came as a result of requests (stitch markers for my sis-in-law the knitter, leather cord necklace for my dude of a brother, customer request for such & such a novel etc. etc.) Every new item I introduced became a culmination of long hours of research, design, innovation and the search for the best materials - all married into the spirit of the book itself. I believe I have the most well-read fan base out there! You guys rock!

MISSION
Another bonus to my craft is the opportunity to give new life to old forgotten books, many of which live in the public domain (check out Project Gutenberg). Dabbling into designing book covers with the specific goal of making sure they were eye-catching when miniaturized came naturally. Sadly, many of these books do not have decent covers or if they do, they are stock images. The Literary Charm is helping find ways to "rescue" them from oblivion — one Book Bead at a time.

CLIENTS
I've been blessed to have worked with so many folks who share my love of the written word — and also suffer book hangovers companionably. It's been a privilege to design custom pieces with several authors whose works range from historical sequels to fantasy — and everything in between. I've also been energized designing creative swag for our B2B and B2C business partners.

Away from crafting, I enjoy spending time with my family and playing with our English bulldogs, who, despite their sour mugs, are just charming!

ALL SALES FINAL.

For jewelry-related hygiene reasons, I do not give refunds on purchases. Please do not buy if you cannot abide by this. Every item is painstakingly photographed and described in great detail to minimize confusion. Buyer's remorse, is therefore, not a valid reason for a return, as there is plenty of time to ask all questions before you commit to buying.

PHOTOGRAPHY and YOUR MONITOR:
I do my best to photograph items in natural light with as much texture, color and detail as I can. That said, please allow for differences in computer monitors that may render colors differently.

If the item is damaged during shipping or has obvious defects, please contact me within 3 days after receiving it. Kindly mail the defective item back to me in "new/saleable" condition. I will either repair or replace the item and send it back to you at my expense.

Did you measure your item incorrectly? Simply return it back to me in the original packaging, so I can make the necessary adjustments. Depending on the nature of the problem, you will be charged for additional materials & work-hours plus return shipping back to you.

If you have any questions, concerns and/or comments, please email me directly. I will do my best for you, and I will be happy to work out any of your problems. I am a very reasonable and accommodating person and I expect the same from you. Thank you and have fun shopping!!

Shipping
AVOID DELAYS: If your item involves a choice, kindly take a moment to verify your order. If you inadvertently forget to leave instructions, kindly e-mail me within Etsy or at thelitcharm [!at] gmail.com. In general, incomplete orders will be placed on hold until I receive further instructions from you, the buyer. I have no wish to second-guess you so, if needed, I will attempt to contact you by e-mail, snail mail or by phone (c/o directory assistance) to expedite the order. If after a week has gone by and I have not heard from you, I will select items by default and send them to you. At this point no exchanges can be made.

STANDARD DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
Shipping is FREE within all 50 United States via USPS First Class Mail Parcel Post. Your item will be shipped within 48 hours of receiving cleared payment (excluding weekends and holidays) AND provided you, the buyer have left *clear* instructions as to choice/selection (if applicable). I do not break orders and will ship in as few packages as possible. I ship to the address indicated on Paypal/Google. It takes anywhere from 2 - 9 days for Parcel Post delivery service, with most of my customers receiving their items within 3 days. A tracking number will be provided but bear in mind that the USPS may/may not update shipping information on a daily basis. I am not responsible for delays due to the postal system and should not be downgraded for issues that are out of my control.

PRIORITY MAIL UPGRADE:
If your package weighs less than 13 oz, for an additional $7, you can upgrade from domestic free shipping to priority mail with the USPS. With this option, packages reach their destination in 2-3 days.

EXPEDITED DOMESTIC (within the US) SHIPPING:
In a hurry? Next day air or Rush delivery requests must be sent by "Instructions to Seller" while ordering or by e-mailing me. I use Fedex or USPS Express Mail. I will need your *phone number* to ship so kindly include that when you check out. This will incur an extra charge depending on the weight of your item(s) starting at $20 and must be paid for before 12 midnight of the day of mailing.

FLAT RATE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
There is a flat rate shipping charge of $15 USD on most international purchases **up to 13 oz.** ($10 USD for Canada & Mexico). The rate is the same, whether you buy one or multiple items from the store. At the moment, I only ship to the countries listed via USPS First Class Mail International Parcel Post. If your country is not listed, contact me to request mailing options (if any). For example, I only ship via Fedex to certain countries because of their Customs restrictions. Please provide me with your telephone number, as this is required to receive a shipping quote.

The buyer is responsible for any incoming custom duties. Please note that depending on where you live, delays can result because of slow customs clearance. I ask for your understanding if this situation arises. Please recognize that this is beyond my control but I'll do what I can to help.

EXPEDITED INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
In a rush? If your order weighs less than 13 oz., we can ship via Yakit, USPS Express Mail International or Fedex for an additional fee. Both guarantee delivery within a few days, for most countries. Contact me if you would like this option and I will send you an invoice separately.

ABOUT THE PEWTER CHARMS:
I scour the world looking for appropriately-themed charms, sort them into collections and then let you pick and choose! No more buying packs of the same charm from a vendor. **Save money** - buy more. The more charms you buy, the greater the savings! Don’t forget: shipping is free within the USA.

I use pewter and Tibet silver (TS) charms that are long-lasting and easy to care for. Both have been tested and are lead and cadmium-free (according to their manufacturers).

Consisting of mostly tin and small amounts of antimony and copper, pewter dates all the way back to the Bronze Age. The more you touch pewter, the faster it develops a patina, which occurs when the pewter begins to oxidize over time. The patina gives your pewter an antique look and protects the layers underneath. If you prefer the shiny "silver" look, using a toothbrush, scrub the charm with mild soap and/or toothpaste and warm water. Towel dry completely. OR you can also you a silver polishing cloth to rub the patina away.

Tibet silver is similar to pewter and consists mainly of copper, zinc and nickel with trace amounts of chromium, aluminum, tin and silver (if at all). The manufacturer indicates that it is cadmium-free. Currently, jewelry, beads and castings described as 'Tibetan Silver' tend to be a base iron casting, overlaid with pewter and some silver plating.

ABOUT the CLAY MINI BOOK CHARMS:
Mini book charms have the image baked permanently into the clay (and will therefore outlast any mini book constructed out of paper). There is no paper cover modge podged or glazed on top of the clay, creating faulty seams that weaken the bead. Constructed of polymer clay, most double-sided books measure about the size of a US quarter dollar approximately. Page ridge detail is etched on three sides of the mini-book. The front, back and spine are fully customizable. Their cut, clarity of image, size and durability are WITHOUT RIVAL. They are worth more because they are *so much* more. And yes, I do custom requests! For a more complete gallery of
