Announcement   We believe in living a self-determined life, connecting directly with the natural elements, and the wild magic contained within plants, animals, and landscape that is to be discovered when you allow them to chart the path.

This is why we work our small scale farmstead the old fashioned way -without chemicals or petroleum intensive machines -only farming practices that help to enhance the land, the environment, the wildlife, and the people that dwell on it.

We believe in honoring the spirit of our ancestors and all who came before us. Of slowing. Of breathing. Of being here now. Of work, of play, of presence. We believe in the great promise of positivity. That the Universe will eventually return to you what you have put into it.

About

An artisanal reimagining of an antique dream...

The Kirk Estate is a haunted 5 1/2 acre farmstead in Upstate New York, passed down generationally since 1904. Its current caretakers are husband and wife team Jen O’Connor and Eric Krans. We believe in living a self-determined life, connecting directly with the natural elements, and the wild magic contained within plants, animals, and landscape that is to be discovered when you allow them to chart the path. This is why we work our small scale farmstead the old fashioned way -with no chemicals or petroleum intensive machines -only farming practices that help to enhance the land, the environment, the wildlife, and the people that dwell on it. We believe in honoring the spirit of our ancestors and all who came before us. Of slowing. Of breathing. Of being here now. Of work, of play, of presence. We believe in the great promise of positivity. That the Universe will eventually return to you what you have put into it.

The Kirk Estate offers meaningfully made, environmentally conscious items such as cold process soaps and small batch apothecary, made by hand using our own organically grown herbs, as well as artfully designed seed packets of our heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Over the years The Kirk Estate has served as host to music performances, art installations, photo shoots, intimate events, and community gatherings.

In addition to farming and artisanship, Jen and Eric write and perform in their band The Parlor, which is named after a room in the farmhouse. The first single off their new album Wahzu Wahzu premiered on Pitchfork. They have performed at the Farm Aid festival alongside music icons Neil Young, Willie Nelson, and Dave Matthews, and have shared the stage with bands including The Lumineers, Man Man, Willy Mason, Sharon Van Etten, and Phantogram.

Notable Press for The Kirk Estate: Etsy’s Spring Lookbook 2016, Etsy’s Holiday Press Event 2015, Green Wedding Shoes, New York Business Journal, Etsy Finds, Etsy Gifts, Etsy Blog, DeliberateLIFE, Eco Chic Wedding, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society.

Jen O'Connor is the vision behind The Kirk Estate; principal farmer, creator, and curator of the haunted 19th century family farmstead. Jen oversees the farm, managing projects ranging from curating our seed collections, to designing and maintaining the organic gardens. Jen is the artisan behind our soap and apothecary products, and these handcrafted items originate from Jen’s original recipes created from tested techniques and age old herbal properties.

An artist by nature, Jen has designed and curated the farmhouse, combining the house’s original heirloom elements with her own designs. The house has been described as “a living museum” and showcases the artworks of five generations. She has lent her design aesthetic to events around the region such as music festivals, private events, photo shoots, and in-home design.

The Kirk Estate features a collection of homegrown organics, handmade cold process soaps, small batch apothecary and original music, born in a 19th century haunted farmhouse in Upstate New York. Since my husband and I moved to The Kirk Estate in 2006 we have added 3,000 square feet of organic vegetable gardens, a dozen additional fruit trees, grapes, hops, herbs and extensive flower gardens. It is our ultimate goal to grow and preserve this land that has been in my family since 1904, always with the environment at the forefront.

Thank you for your support!

Additional policies and FAQs
NaOH aka Sodium hydroxide aka lye: is the base, or chemical compound that creates saponification. Saponification is the natural reaction that causes oils and fats to transform into soap. Pure sodium hydroxide will never be in a finished bar of soap; it has reacted with the oils and has been chemically changed to form soap and glycerin. True handmade soap can not be made without lye.

Frequently asked questions

gift wrapping and packaging

Complementary gift notes are available upon request.

printed receipts and planting instructions

In an effort to save ink and paper, a printed invoice is not included with your order. If you would like a receipt to be included with your purchase please let me know before your item is shipped.

Planting instructions are included under each listing. Printed instructions will be included upon request.

about our seeds

Because our seeds are separated by hand and not machine, expect to see some plant chaff mixed in with your seeds. This organic plant matter will break down naturally in the soil. All of our seeds and herbs are grown using organic, sustainable, and natural farming practices. No fertilizers or chemicals are ever used. Plants are only fed homemade compost, sun, rain, and limited Village water when necessary. Seeds are packaged in one of a kind handmade envelopes made from recycled paper, or in 100% recyclable kraft envelopes in order to reduce the amount of waste that surrounds our products.

storing and planting your seed

Seeds are hand packed to ensure you receive only the healthiest seeds. Please familiarize yourself with growing conditions and instructions for your seeds before you plant them, as all seeds are different. Basic growing instructions can be found under each listing or by going to http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/index.html to find your State's Cooperative Extension. Be sure to keep your seeds well watered after you plant them to ensure proper germination. Keep your seeds alive by storing them properly: keep your seeds in a dark, cool place (40-50 degrees F) with low-humidity. Never store seed in a warm, humid, or sunny spot. Stored properly, most seed will last for several years.

about our soap

Our soap is made the old fashioned way in small batches here at the Kirk Estate, using the cold process method and a combination of natural and organic vegetable oils as well as organic herbs from our farmstead. All of our soap is free of dyes and animal byproducts and has a light natural scent.

required FDA disclaimer

As required by the FDA, we do not make any claims regarding the cosmetic or health related properties of our soaps.

my soap is sweating, is that normal?

It is normal for handmade soap to sweat lightly when it can't breathe or when it is hot and humid. Once you receive your soap, unwrap it and place in a cool, dry place to allow any excess moisture to evaporate.
