It's a Dreams and Vision Kinda Thing

"To dream is to see..." (ancient proverb of the renowned needle-felting Sage, Madame Bumbles)

Smuggled on to a tea clipper at the age of 5, I grew up quickly with the sea as my tutor. I learned to read by deciphering the generations of graffiti scratched on to the internal skeleton of the great wooden hulk. (Some say this prolonged exposure influenced the alleged fruitiness of my vocabulary...Ha!)

When the ship landed, finally, in Canton, I was apprenticed to a barber who specialised in the manufacture of glass eyes. Though the barber was kindly at first, after a time I was banished to the workshop below-stairs where I worked endlessly, forbidden to see the light, painting pupils in a range of colours from the bluest blue of the oceans to the nuttiest hazel of an autumn forest.

For ten years life was hard but I wasn't ill-treated, I just craved the freedom of the open country and the salt-licked seas so, early one winter morning, I packed a voluminous, spotted kerchief with a hunk of stale black bread and some rheumy cheese, and escaped from the 'employ' of the barber.

My eyes slowly acclimatized to the light and, with my day-vision returning, I made my way down to the docks and snuck on to a clipper back to the Old Country where - to cut a very long and meandering story short- I grew to be a painter and maker of dream-like paintings and prints of mythical beasts and metaphysical poets for the discerning Virtual Grand Tourist.

I am painting still - ancient now as the wooden hulks that transported me across the great oceans from West to East and back again. My eyesight is not as good as it once was; indeed, one eye (if you look closely) betrays the skills of the Glass Eye Painters' Guild, but it does me well for, you see, even in my current state of disrepair, "to dream is to see".

Enjoy the long labours of my vision.
