Modern Handmade Ceramics

Welcome and thanks for visiting The Lulu Bird!

During the day, I am an art therapist; I have worked with many populations including children with developmental disorders, newly arrived refugees, and children who suffer from serious medical conditions. I love my job, but it can be emotionally taxing, and pottery is my release from all of that. I create functional, wheel-thrown pottery here in Durham North Carolina, and am drawn to simple patterns, clean lines, and unfussy shapes. All my glazes are lead free, and all finished products are food, dishwasher, and microwave safe.

I have a personal theory that everything you need to know about life you can learn from working with clay.

Making pottery teaches you to be present in the moment. It teaches you let go and move on - to accept that things don't always work out the way you want. Sometimes the kiln mis-fires, a piece cracks, or a glaze runs in an unexpected way. Working with clay teaches you that it's ok to get dirty, that you have to always be mindful, and to find that happy space balance between being strong and being gentle.

Here are a few more lessons from the pottery studio:
Enjoy the process
Let go
Embrace the unknown
Rethink your definition of "perfect"
Be patient
Get messy
Good things take time
There is always more to learn

Thanks for stopping by!

If you are new to Etsy, here is a helpful link on how to make a purchase:
Shipping is provided by USPS.

All products marked as "in stock" will ship within 3 days of purchase. Custom pieces take up to 30 days to complete.

Shipping ceramics requires a lot of "cushioning"! in attempts to conserve the planet, I use recycled bubble wrap from a local Re-use Center called the Scrap Exchange. If you are able, please re-use it again!

Please note that once package is shipped I am no longer in control of arrival times. If you are experiencing a delay please contact your local post office. Please note that if you are an international buyer shipping can take 6 weeks or longer. Customs may open or hold your package without notice. There is nothing I can do about this as it just depends on how your customs office works.

If upon receiving your purchase the item has been damaged during shipping, contact me right away. Send me a picture of the item and I will refund your purchase or remake your item for you free of cost.
