Just WOW! It was so hard to pick which collection I was in love with more but ultimately I went with this group for my little picnic set. I could not be more in love with them and can't wait to show them off!
It's fun to see a design transformed into a melamine plate.
Hooray! Melamine plates are back and we are so lucky to have customers that like TheMadPlatters plates and platters.
I joined Etsy in 2007 and I can't imagine life without my Etsy shops! TheMadPlatters Etsy shop is presently one of our two shops. Many of our plates and platters feature designs directly related to our Dictionary Page Art Prints and the famous Lina Cavalieri engraving at our other shop, http://fauxkiss.etsy.com. TheMadPlatter plates are my original plate designs mostly sourced from vintage or antique artwork, enhanced and/or altered by me. My husband, Kit helps with processing customer orders and lots of miscellaneous tasks and where ever help is needed. Kit also does most of the cooking so I have more time to create.
THE PROCESS: While I design my plates here in my home studio, each is “made to order” by a third party, a melamine plate manufacturer in the USA. Once I've completed a plate design and put it into the format for the manufacturing process, the template needs approval from the manufacturer. Once approved, I order a test run plate to see the design in person, that is as a melamine plate. Sometimes the design is not as envisioned once it becomes a plate requiring modifications and several test runs.
When an Etsy customer places an order I contact the manufacturer with all the necessary information to manufacture their custom plate. Manufacturing turn around time is usually about 5 business days but can be up to ten. To expedite shipping time and save shipping fees, the USA company that manufactures my plates ships them to my customers instead of to me (so I am not shipping once again - on to my customers).
THeMadPlatters ORIGINAL CAVALIERI FACE PLATES: I fell in love with the well known Lina Cavalieri portrait. In an old interview with the Piero Fornasetti, Piero indicated he found the Lina Cavalieri face in a 19th century magazine. Quoting the interview: "What inspired me to create more than 500 variations on the face of a woman? I don't know," he admits, "I began to make them and I never stopped."
Myself, I appreciate the "I never stopped" part of this story! I too love creating new designs using the Lina Cavalieri portrait. It's devilishly addictive :)
Both Kit and I feel very lucky to have found Etsy and especially thankful for customers that enjoy our melamine plates! Thank You!
USA MELAMINE HISTORY:
Melmac is a brand name of dinnerware molded from melamine resin made by American Cyanamid most popular in the 1940's and 1950's.
Melamine dinnerware is created with the use of melamine and was most popular in the 1940's and 1950's. First developed in the 1940s, melamine resin is easily molded into a number of different shapes and is extremely durable. During the middle of the 20th century, Melmac dinnerware could be found in just about every home in the United States.
In construction, Melmac is used for just about any type of dinnerware. Melmac serving bowls were common, as well as plates, cups, and glasses. Any type of color pigment could be added to the melamine during the molding process. As a result, Melmac dinnerware was created in a number of colors and patterns. During the decade of the 1950’s, solid but somewhat muted colors such as seafoam or pea green were popular. The 1960s saw the creation of many interesting color combinations, including some that reflected the psychedelic look that was so popular in fashion during the latter part of the decade.
Along with use in the home, Melmac was often used in school cafeterias. Utilizing a round or rectangular design, Melmac trays were often divided into sections that made it possible to easily place each entrée, vegetable, and dessert into place while going through the line. Many designs even included a slot that was ideal for the placement of a half-pint of milk or a coffee cup.
One of the main attributes of Melmac is the durability. The lightweight plastic construction holds up very well. The dinnerware can be washed by hand or placed in a dishwasher with equal ease. Unlike china, ceramic or glass, Melmac does not shatter when dropped. Households with children found Melmac to be ideal for use at informal family dinners as well as with cookouts in the back yard.
By the end of the 1970s, Melmac had declined in popularity as other forms of crockery began to appear. Still, the sturdiness of the dinnerware has meant that many pieces manufactured decades ago still survive. Collectors can find Melmac at many online auctions sites. Yard and estate sales are excellent sources of Melmac dishes at low prices. While no longer in common use in a lot of household situations, Melmac has begun to achieve a certain distinction as a decorative item, especially in kitchens that are designed around a Fifties or Sixties theme.
I've always had a passion for nature and beautiful things. I grew up in the country and many of my earliest memories are of all the wonders to be found exploring the dense woods behind us and in that creek running through our yard.

Melamine Dinnerware made here in the USA
The manufacturer has been creating customized melamine dinnerware for over 40 years and is located in the USA. We have worked together since 2011.
Plates are best in person! It seems impossible to capture the color and details of the artwork for the web view. PLEASE NOTE: that the view online will vary between different monitors and the view on a monitor differs some from the plate in person.
The Mad Platters is our 2nd Etsy shop. Many of my plates and platters feature designs directly related to my Dictionary Page Art Prints found at http://fauxkiss.etsy.com
