About

A colourful History

I took a City and Guilds course in Art and Design - Embroidery, thinking that I could become a 17th Century embroideress, however I then discovered that I couldn't obtain the type of embroidery silks that I needed, so I learned to spin silk and to use Natural Dyes. From there The Mulberry Dyer was born, I was asked where I was getting my silks from, so I started producing them for sale.

Researching and replicating colours of the past is a thrill for me, I love playing with colour, it is very important that I get the dyeing even, lightfast and washfast. The dyers of history had very high standards and Guilds to enforce those standards. We should aim for the same!

Welcome to The Mulberry Dyer. THE place to purchase naturally dyed yarns.
Established in the early 1990's we have been producing naturally dyed yarns, fibres and cloth ever since. We love what we produce and hope you will too!
Although we are working as though we are Medieval dyers using the most lightfast and washfast dyes available, we have a thoroughly modern attitude with an Environmental Policy which we work to and update. Where possible we use organically certified or approved produce. We are working towards 100% compostable or biodegradable packaging (at present around 95%)

Additional policies and FAQs
Our yarns are dyed using historical methods which have been tried and tested for thousands of years. When working with our yarns you should not find any rub off from the dye onto your hands or tools when knitting or crochetting, If you should find any problem please get in touch and we will exchange immediately!

The yarns are rinsed in hot water and have a final soak in Eucalan wool conditioner to protect the fibres and act as a moth repellent. They are then stored in airtight boxes in a separate storeroom. We have no pets here, so there should be no animal allergy problems.

Please treat our yarns kindly and wash them by hand or on the wool cycle using a neutral detergent, we cannot guarrantee the colour will not change or run if you DO NOT!

The bulk of our work is commission based, if you have a special request or a colour to match please get in touch and we will do our best to help.
