One of the pop-up pages in my limited edition artists’ book “Shells”. This 3-D ‘coil’ was inspired by the lovely spirals found in seashells, particularly a top shell I bought from the Shell Museum in Glandford, Norfolk.
It’s always cheering to receive a coloured envelope through the post so I’ve invested in these to co-ordinate with the pop-up butterfly cards. New photos will be on the site shortly but the orange envelopes are for the orange tip butterfly card, etc, etc!
Some butterflies are big and showy but the Speckled Wood has an understated delicacy and charm that is equally as appealing. You can catch a glimpse of these butterflies in the dappled shade of trees.

About

Working with pen & ink, watercolour and marbling, I love to turn my art into vintage style books.

My love of drawing began with the Milly-Molly-Mandy books of Joyce Lankester Brisley and the charming illustrations by EH Shepherd in 'The Wind in the Willows' and the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. They inspired me, as quite a small child, to write and illustrate my own books about the adventures of a family of rabbits - and this long before I'd heard of Beatrix Potter.

These early influences can be seen in the "My Garden and Other Animals' limited edition artist's pop-up book which draws inspiration from the enchanting maps that appeared at the front of both the Milly-Molly-Mandy and Winnie-the-Pooh books.

My work has been described as quintessentially English, charming and with a vintage feel. This isn't altogether too surprising as I love antiques and have been inspired by the Victorian natural history collections in the Norwich Castle Museum for many of my projects, and the archive records of the National Trust property Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk for others.

All by work begins with my original watercolour and pen & ink illustrations. I have always admired the marbled endpaper of books of this period and this prompted me to have a go at marbling paper myself - something of an addiction now. My love of calligraphy also started at a young age - I used money from my paper-round to buy my first specialist italic fountain pen - and I now have lots of sample 'alphabet' books, as well as collecting examples of interesting type faces wherever I go.

I'm currently working on a fourth pop-up book in my Norwich Castle Museum natural history collection series so I'm hoping, in a couple of months' time, to add 'British Butterflies' to the 'Butterflies', 'Shells' and 'Eggs' series. In the meantime, I've been working on a range of little concertina books inspired by my love of nature and my garden and these are now available in my Etsy shop.
