I've been making things up for over 20 years

Hi, I’m Paul. I’m the artist-creative-photographer type from south London behind The Occasional Press. I’m a husband and dad who has been making a living doing things he loves for 20 years.

I’m the ‘We’ in a team of one. So when I say “We make their gift, you make their day” I’m not talking about a team of creators, it’s just me.

Of course the ‘We’ in my strapline is important though, it’s not just there to make me sound like the next Not On The High Street, it’s actually there to signify the importance of my customers in the creative process.

So the ‘We’ is actually ‘us’, that’s you and me.

Together we make the gift that will not only make their day, but turn you into some sort of gift giving deity for a very long while.

Don’t worry I’ll be doing most of the heavy lifting, but you will have involvement all along the way, giving me critiques and amendments to make until you are 100% happy we can send it off to the printers.

SO, WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
The Occasional Press is a bespoke design service that occasionally creates unique gifts for the people you love. I don’t work in a factory, and my products do not come hot off a conveyor belt like mince pies in December.

From my smallest product up, each piece is made to order, for you to give to them. With your input, your favourite photos, colours and approved layout.
I like to make things you couldn’t get in the shops.

REMEMBERING NOW
As life whizzes past, I think it’s important to stop every now and then to take stock.I started The Occasional Press to help people do just that, to celebrate and mark important occasions in their family's lives.I like to think of it as Remembering Now.
Not just the big occasions either, I mean those busy periods in between occasions that we call life, when your family is literally growing in front of your eyes.
Be it your babies becoming toddlers, or children becoming adults. Creating unique records of these times make priceless keepsakes, and not just for you but for future generations.

Saying 'I Love You'...There’s nothing more important than telling the special people in your lives how much you love them and no better way than making a personal gift to say it with.

And a Little bit more about Paul...It’s hard to know when I first wanted to be an artist. As a kid I would walk past the local art school in a daze, marvelling at this wonderful school where you could go just to draw.

A school where PE and maths were not spoken of, and history had the word art infront of it.

My Dad recognised my habit of clinging to the railings and drooling as enthusiasm and started taking me along to his evening art classes at the age of 10.

From said local art school in Wimbledon, to the strange anti-metropolis that is Canterbury where I gained a BA Hons in Fine Art and a Phd in eating £1 noodles.
Once graduated, myself and aforementioned Dad decided it would be fun to try our hand at market trading, and spent a long cold winter in Spitalfields market, attempting to sell our art and photography.

Here we made two very important discoveries; we found the best bacon baps in London and we learnt that people are less interested in buying art and more amazed by handmade soap – that’s a licence to print money, believe you me.

Selling art is not easy. I needed some sort of direction, I needed an income, I needed an idea... I know, I thought, I'll go back to college for a year and think about it.
I did a professional photography B-Tech course (It was last century) at the London College of Printing and by varying degrees of luck, hard work and winging it have ended up being a photographer for the last 20 years.

I've built up my own freelance business and shot for many many different clients (I still am and do) and love it.

20 Years of Making Things Up

I launched my own comic brand, LowHumour.com in 2010 and created an art gallery inside a local American diner, called The WC Gallery in 2015.

Admittedly it’s in the diner toilet, but you’ve got to start somewhere.

Throughout all this I've been building up my own visual language and approach to making images. Now I apply this to the task of helping people create unique gifts for their loved ones.
