About

Buttons and Thread

I started sewing when I was little, making dresses for my dolls from scraps of material and using very big stitches. Over the years, I carried on experimenting with design (and improving my stitching) by altering and making clothes for myself - including taking in my awfully wide jeans when drainpipe trousers came into fashion, and making last minute outfits for school discos. Yes, I still have the photos and yes, the pink polka dot puffball dress does look hideous in hindsight....
Although I never really stopped completely, sewing took a back seat to my accountancy exams and then a career and family life. It wasn’t until my children were in middle school that I really started designing and making things to sell.
It all started with a school fete when an external stall holder pulled out last minute. I said “No problem - I’m sure I can whip together a few kids’ aprons to put on a stall”. And so The Old Button was born - inspired by a box of old buttons my grandmother had given me as a child.
From the very beginning I’ve designed and made an eclectic mix. I get a real buzz out of coming up with a new idea and working out how I can translate it into a workable pattern. And I hardly ever make the exact same thing twice so you’ll find an ever-changing range in my shop. Although I do have a particular fondness for my first school fete products – I still make my little reversible aprons but I keep my creative juices going by constantly coming up with new fabric combinations and colours.
And the common thread? My passion for great materials, excellent workmanship and a huge attention to detail in everything I do.
Hope you enjoy browsing, Sharon

I’m The Old Button - although I'd prefer less of the old! I dream the ideas and work out the patterns and then hand craft and market my makes myself. And I have great input from my teenage kids and husband, but they are not on the payroll... yet....

I will be taking orders until late afternoon on the 20th December.

Everywhere else
I am sorry but it is too late to send Christmas items overseas

These dates are based on Royal Mail's recommended times - items should arrive in time for Christmas but I cannot guarantee it. Please order early to make sure you get your special item in time.

The time taken to dispatch each item out varies - ready to ship items will go in 1-3 days. Personalised and custom orders will take longer - you'll find details on each listing.

Delivery times after dispatch vary depending on your location.

UK - I usually post First Class Royal Mail within the UK, but will sometimes use another courier for heavy items such as big patchwork quilts or multi item purchases. Delivery is usually 2-3 days after posting.

Overseas - I happily ship items all over the world. I use Airmail for most items but will use sometimes use another courier for heavy or bulky items. Delivery times vary - please contact me if you'd like an estimated time and I'll look it up for you. Please check the customs/tax fees for your own country before buying - you may need to pay a local fee before you can receive your parcel - and remember that customs processes in your country can add to delivery time.

Upgrades - please convo me if you'd like express delivery or tracking added.

I am sure you will love your unique item as much as I loved making it.

Of course we all change our minds sometimes and for non- personalised or customised items I am more than happy to offer a refund if you return it in an unused condition within 28 days.

I'm sorry but I can't normally offer a full refund if you change your mind on personalised or customised items - but I may be able to offer a partial refund if I am able to modify it for resale.

I will always offer a full refund or replacement if any item has a flaw or fault that is my mistake.

For all returns, please convo me first so I can give you the full return delivery address. Refunds will be given on receipt of returned item.
