About

"perhaps you've come to tell us, the old is new again, each birth enriching aged earth"

Those are the last few lines from the poem " Five day old Alyssa Jeanne, from her granddad whom she hasn't seen... written of course my my grandfather, Richard Work, and the title of my shop.

I've always loved old things, from the time I could remember, they hold life, and tell a story. Everyone is so quick to look forwards, they forget to look back. In this throw away society I want to create heirloom-quality textiles, hand-painted, hand-sewn, using Vintage prints, French lace, Ethnic and tribal fabrics, bringing a new garment forward into the now, the new.

I've studied the art of Chinese brush painting for over a decade now, and in the place of embroidery, I create botanical paintings, which, of course are machine washable.

I'm studying towards an Art degree BA (hons) in textiles with the OCA.

Since living in Saigon, I've finally had the time to do all of the things I have ever dreamt of. I've remade my favorite Victorian pajamas into a range of comfortable and pretty nighties, and bloomers. I've discovered a way of using my art to create one of a kind prints, made into tops and scarves, and so recently I've had a chance to travel to the North of Vietnam where I discovered the Ethnic Tribes, the H'mong and Dao.

I realized how wrong it would be of me to profit off of their heritage textiles, so in turn, I've decided to work with them, empowering them to create and design their own product range to sell on Etsy, eventually, to become independent makers and shop owners. All profits from anything made from Ethnic fabric will go directly into the project.

Oh, I should probably mention I make everything myself, on a singer hand-sewing machine.. I have no members of staff, only my fiance who helps me take and edit photographs. I am also rubbish with promotions and marketing so, it would help and be so find if you'd like my facebook page, check out my website, and share with your friends, that'd give me a huge boost in confidence (it ain't easy on your own).

WHY BUY ORGANIC COTTON?

The fashion industry has a significant impact on the environment, and this includes the pesticides and chemicals used to create our textiles. One way to reduce your fashion footprint is to choose certified organic clothing.

By purchasing pieces that have been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), you’re guaranteeing that your clothing is free from toxic chemicals and pollutants, from the harvest to the factory, to you.

Organic cotton is not exposed to the weakening, harsh chemicals that commercially grown cotton is, therefore organic cotton will last many years, with proper care.

Care instructions

For best care, garments should be hand-washed in warm water with a gentle eco-friendly soap and air-dried. Organic cotton and hand-painted pieces can be machine washed on delicate cycles in cool-warm water. Air dry is best. Can iron on cotton settings.

All ethnic fabric should be washed separately, as indigo dyes may run.
