About

The story of three generations 'tatting' non stop

Tatting dates back to the early 19th century and it is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops.

The name in both Italian (chiacchierino) and English is a synonym for chatting. Ladies, in fact, used to sit and chat over their needlework.

All the vintage tatting sold by TheGrannysTatting was made by Granny Lina in the 1980s. Lina has a daughter, Lory, and a gran-daughter, Sere, who run the shop together. So this is the work of three generations!

In the old times, Italian ladies used to sit for hours, days and months and create all sorts of artwork with shuttle tatting techniques. Granny Lina made a table top and even an entire bedcover completely in lace, but never sold her work. This is because old ladies used to only decorate their family homes with it.

When Lina stopped working, she left a lot of unfinished pieces, which Sere and Lory collected and revived. They have decorated the tatting units with beadwork and made jewellery out of it.

Apart from the vintage tatting, Sere and Lory are now experimenting with new tatting techniques. The latest designs and creations are sold alongside the vintage ones in the shop, and you can read and find more about each single piece of jewellery in the description section.
