Carol Datura Riot creates props, costumes and gowns inspired by comics, glam rock, wizards, elves, fairies, grunge music, and all manner of nerdy things.


Over the years Carol has exhibited her work in New York, London and Miami, helped to create holiday windows on New York's Fifth Avenue, and most recently she designed and constructed the sets for MISTI-Con, a Harry Potter convention in New Hampshire. Carol is also known for her many hand made costumes and dresses inspired by Nine Inch Nails album cover art.


She studied art and design in New York at The School of Visual Arts and F.I.T, though most of her methods are entirely self taught. She loves a challenge and is always striving for excellence in everything that she does.

Through her Etsy Shop The Potions Mistress, Carol Datura Riot sells ready to ship costumes and cosplay gear. She also creates custom work upon request.

I am The Potions Mistress. I am descended down from a family known for bravery, potion making and sarcasm. I am a proud Slytherin and I am not afraid of the so called Dark Arts - in fact, I love all the arts. I love to draw, sculpt and sew clothing. I decided to open this shop to share my creations with you. Thank you for visiting - please feel free to ask me any questions.

Returns and exchanges

Contact me within: 7 days of delivery
Ship items back within: 14 days of delivery
I don't accept exchanges or cancellations
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
  • Items on sale
If you are not happy with an item that you have received, you may return it unused and undamaged in the original packaging within 7 days of Recorded Delivery for a refund. Please note that shipping costs cannot be refunded. Refunds cannot be issued until the returned item or items have been received.

 They buyer is responsible for all shipping costs, including the cost of return shipping.

Rush order fees are not refundable.

This refund policy does not cover special commissions for new items or custom made orders, this includes items that have been tweaked or altered by size or color. Please review all measurements carefully.

Cancellations: If you need to cancel an order, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can accommodate other orders. Please note that Custom Orders cannot be cancelled or refunded once I have begun work on them.
Payment
I accept Paypal and Etsy Direct Checkout payments.

Payment must be received before I begin work on custom orders. Custom orders cannot be refunded. Please review dimensions and specifications carefully before ordering.

I do offer payment plans. Payments for items or multiple items can be split into two or more payments. At least one payment must be made for me to begin work. All payments have to be in before I can ship an order.

When making payments as part of a payment plan, it is okay if you need extra time or have to miss a payment - however I would ask that you please contact me to let me know you will be late and to let me know when you think you may be able to make your next payment so that I can make any necessary changes to my schedule.

Missing a payment may result in the delay of your order, particularly if it is a custom order. Continued failure to make payments will result in the cancellation of your order.

I fully understand economic hardship. However, if you are unable to pay me for my time, labor and materials - I would ask that you not place an order with me until you are able to do so.

Orders are subject to cancellation. While I will do everything in my power to complete your items on time, if I become injured or have an emergency- I may not be able to complete an order. If this occurs, I will let you know as early as possible. I'm sorry for any inconvenience but I don't have a partner working with me if something beyond my control occurs.

When ordering, please message me for specific times when purchasing made to order items. My production time varies from week to week based upon how many orders I have. I work on orders on a first come first serve basis. Rush orders are available for an added fee. Please note that I cannot reserve slots in my queue unless you have made a partial payment (as in a payment plan) or paid for the item(s) in full.

Please contact me before placing orders that are needed for a specific date. Please do not simply leave me a note with your order telling to you need items Rush created and shipped and assume I will rush ship items without contacting me first. You must pay any additional shipping fees and you must check with me first as I may be not be able to accommodate extra orders or create you items in an extremely short time span.
Shipping
Please message me for specific times when purchasing made to order items. My production time varies from week to week based upon how many orders I have. I work on orders on a first come first serve basis. Rush orders are available for an added fee. Please note that I cannot reserve slots in my queue unless you have made a partial payment (as in a payment plan) or paid for the item in full.

I ship via USPS. Once shipped, items can take 7 - 10 business days in transit for domestic orders. International shipping can take 2-3 weeks or longer. I cannot guarantee shipping times for overseas orders unless you upgrade to Express shipping. Please understand that items can get held up in customs for weeks and that this is beyond my control.

Shipping notifications will be sent with tracking numbers for domestic orders. For items shipped internationally, custom numbers will be given - please note that tracking may not be available for your country. Shipping times vary depending on your location, and the number of packages being handled by the USPS at the time. If you'd like to upgrade to either Priority or Express shipment please contact me ahead of time to make necessary arrangements.

Items can only be shipped. I do not offer local pick up at this time.

I'm very sorry, but I do not ship to either Chile or India at this time.

Please be very careful when providing your shipping address - particularly if your items are needed for a specific date . Mislabeled packages often take a very long time to return to sender and will be beyond my control to intercept or expedite. Once they have been returned to me, I can resend mislabeled packages, but the buyer is responsible for all shipping costs.

I will ship to the address that is provided to me upon ordering. If you need your items shipped to a different address than the one you have given Etsy, please contact me as soon as you order so that I can change the address label. I cannot change the address on a package once it has been sent out. You must notify me of any address change BEFORE I ship the items.

I am not responsible for lost or stolen packages once they have been marked as delivered. It is the buyer's responsibility to ensure that someone is home for delivery if need be.

I ship via USPS. I will always finish and ship items on time. While it is extremely rare, packages can occasionally be delayed by a few days. Please take this into account when ordering. I will do everything in my power to ensure that orders are sent and shipped with ample time, once a package goes missing or is delayed it is beyond my power.

* Priority Mail in the US averages 2-5 business days, but can take up to 21 business days.
* First Class Mail Internationally averages 2-3 weeks, but can take up to 3 months if a package is stopped by your customs enforcement.

Due to the nature of the items in my shop, I do not offer free shipping. Shipping costs include the cost of postage and handling as well. I understand that shipping costs can be quite high, and I am very sorry about this. I do what I can to keep costs down by creating items that can be separated for easy transport, but unfortunately shipping rates are not something that I can control.

Everything that I ship is carefully wrapped to ensure that the items arrive at their new homes safely. All boxes will be labeled as fragile in multiple places. It is extremely rare, but packages do occasionally arrive damaged. If your package is damaged in transit, please let me know right away. If this does occur, you may return the item(s) for repair or a refund.

All customs duties are to be paid by the buyer. All orders will be marked as merchandise, I cannot mark them as gifts as it is illegal. Please note, it is the responsibility of the buyer to be aware of the customs duties and limits of their country as they are the one importing the item. I'm very sorry, but there's no way for me to know the customs duties for every country in the world.
Additional policies and FAQs
Please understand that I work over 60 per week, I am extremely pressed for time. As a result, I am unable provide tutorials, process photos or detailed information on the materials or the construction of items in my shop or things that I have made for use my own personal costumes.

When ordering, please provide a working email address where you the buyer can be reached. If for some reason you must use a parent or a spouses email address - please make sure that they check their messages. It is possible that I may need to contact you to clarify a shipping address, or some other matter regarding your order such a size discrepancy with a custom order. If you do not respond to my messages in a timely fashion, I may be forced to cancel your order. I understand that this may be frustrating - but I simply cannot ship to incomplete addresses, nor can I start work on items where there is not full clarity on what you the buyer would like to have made.

Please use the items I make responsibly. These are cosplay props intended for use at comic cons, photo shoots, costume parties and other similar events. The items I make are not recommended as toys for infants or very young children. These items are props and not intended for use in actual combat, martial arts classes or other related activities. Do not hit, threaten or use these items in any way that may cause harm to another person.

Please remain aware of your surroundings at all times when wearing larger Headpieces or carrying larger props - particularly in areas where there will be a lot of people.

I only sell fully completed items. I don not sell kits, patterns or unpainted items.

Please contact me prior to placing orders for custom work.

I can only contact you via Etsy's messaging system. Please do not ask me to text, call, Skype or use any form of communication that is off site.
