How it all began....

I loved school, but swore I wouldn't go into art, as I believed that I would never make enough money to survive. So...I got my BA in Anthropology and my MA in Theatre, focusing on costume design (obviously my fight against art and the humanities was a lost cause). Grad school left me emotionally and spiritually drained beyond comprehension. I had struggled so much with my purpose and place in the world, and needed to regroup. So, one rainy spring afternoon, I picked up my pencil/pen/and watercolor brushes and started drawing...and out came this little guy, standing in the rain. I had first created a similar character years ago when experimenting with watercolor pencils...but this time the image was more clear and his character more evident. I started drawing him, again and again. He always had his eyes covered and always seemed to have a smirk or a frown...but not because he was grumpy or perpetually unhappy. The frown came more from the given circumstances plus there seemed to be a determination about him that was inspirational! I showed the painting to my mother and asked what she thought I should call him. Without a blink she said, "Oh! That's Pudgy Paul!" And a new character was born.

Introduction to Pudgy Paul....
Pudgy Paul is a lovable, quiet, curious, 3-4 year's old boy, who must endure the little challenges that life brings...including that of being a son of a crafty mother. His mother (who is the unseen catalyst for most of my Pudgy Paul's paintings) is a costume designer by trade (like me) and also enjoys experimenting with different forms of craft -the fruits of which usually result in another costume. I imagine her dressing Pudgy Paul in each costume (which despite her skills, always seem to cover his eyes) and having him stand still while she carefully takes a picture. I imagine him standing there waiting for the picture to be taken saying, "Common mom!" In this way, Pudgy Paul is a ode to all of the children and spouses of crafty creatives (like my husband patiently waiting for hours while I shop at Michael's). He also is a reminder that we are not alone in our perseverance through life's challenges. And sometimes, the weight of life's big challenges can seem smaller when seen through the eyes of a child.

More about the artist...
Megan France lives with her husband in the beautiful Eastern panhandle of West Virginia. While they currently do not have any kids of their own, they love being "aunts and uncles" to the many kids of their friends and family. When not painting, Megan spends her time subbing for the local elementary schools and costume designing for the local high school theatre productions.
