Hello everyone, and welcome to my Etsy shop 'TheRoadie'!
I learned my leather-crafting in Japan and having recently moved to Tasmania. My design is driven by the joy of combining practicality and functionality with the aesthetic of beauty and the durability of natural leather.
My design aesthetic is simple and guided by three core principles:
1. Durability: I use leather because it lasts - and as such represents an opportunity to move away from our society's addiction to disposables and plastics.
2. Functionality: The products I make are useful. They are simple, yet practical and minimise waste -I always make something useful from even the smallest scraps.
3. Fun: It's better than boring, isn’t it? Life's too short not to enjoy it!
How I got the start with making hand-crafted leather goods, I have to
tell a little bit long story... After 11 years working in the high-pressure, high-stress environment of financial consulting, something inside of me was calling to be free. I gave up everything and travelled around Japan with my husband and our dogs. On this journey I discovered that the voice that was calling to me was my own creativity. I was fortunate to meet a range of wonderful artisans and musicians along the way who happily shared their skills and crafts with me. These people took me into their homes and taught me the arts of leather-crafting and plant-based fabric-dyeing. I now listen more closely to my inner voice and work to bring into being the beauty and creativity it shares with me.
As written above, I gave up a "serious" day job in corporate business consulting to focus on my passion for creativity. I now spend most of my time making leather goods at home, inspired by the beautiful mountain & forest of Tasmania.
