Announcement    MY COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT: Please practice the social distancing practices relevant in your locality. International orders may face long delays. I am very grateful to my customers for their patience and I am sorry that I can't get your orders to you sooner.

Made-to-order items and packaging will be made from quality reclaimed materials or materials from small businesses.

Opened on the 30th of November 2018! Want ideas on where you can wear kimono? See here: http://theryugiya.yolasite.com/places-to-wear-kimono.php

Synthetic fabrics can be long-lasting so you need to replace them less often. But in the environment, synthetic particles can last a very long time and interfere with the reproductive health of sea life. Please consider buying a Guppy Friend wash bag so that your laundry releases fewer synthetic particles into the environment! https://en.guppyfriend.com/

The Ryugiya, or 流儀屋

2021 Update: Since I first formed this store a lot seems to have changed in the kimono community. It seems to have grown and changed enough that fears that kimono itself could go extinct are allayed at least for now. So, while I still happily promote kimono wearing, I take more of the stance that kimono wearing tools and practices can be developed to make dressing easier, rather than to be too concerned with classes.

However, there are other issues I would seek to change.

Fast fashion is still a problem. The current clothing industry is still excessively wasteful and exploitation of garment workers still exists. I still recommend avoiding products made in China. If you must buy them, I suggest buying through a merchant local to you so that your own local dollar is still being strengthened. See what China has been doing in international waters if you are wondering why I'm so keen to see the Chinese government defunded. If you must buy fast fashion, I suggest going with Bangladesh instead. Their economy is troubled and heavily dependent on garment manufacturing. So, funding them will actually fund better quality of living.

Fibre pollution in the water system continues to be a concern. So, I still recommend Guppy Friend bags to all people who wear synthetic or regenerated fibres. I have continued to avoid using new synthetics as much as possible, preferring to reuse or recycle existing synthetics. I have wondered, however, if it would be better still to cease to use synthetics all together. But this may be too radical of a change, particularly since the impact of fibre pollution is still not fully understood, and I'm not sure that putting all used synthetics into landfill would be any better.

Also, disposable sanitary pads continue to be a recurring expense for women and to be a source of plastic pollution. So, I still hope to develop and promote the use of reusable pads and period panties. My sales of these products seem to have gone down in recent history, and so I hope that I can maybe design reusables that are somehow more appealing or more cost effective. I'm hoping to get further feedback from people over time.

But I wanted to take a moment to thank all the amazing people who have purchased from me so far. You may not know it, but every time an order comes in it thrills me. Knowing that I've created things that have added to the lives of others has been a source of joy for me. And really, what would I have without the people who purchased from me? So thank you, all.

I'm a writer, a sewer and a seller. I've been wearing kimono since 2008. I want to show people how to wear kimono. But I also seek new ways kimono technology can be incorporated into the contemporary wardrobe to create more ethical fashion.
