Sharing the love of tie dye all around the planet

Isobel Green; The Studio Isobel

All of my hand dyed pieces are lovingly created by me in my home in California, the home of tie dye since its inception in the 1960s.

I first arrived at the colorful world of tie dye over a decade ago when I sold in person at local markets and summer festivals on the shores of New Jersey. I listened to my customers’ ideas and preferences and created unique and unusual tie dye for them to wear. In California I continue to work creativity producing hand dyed bedding sets in my studio in a little corner of suburbia called Pleasanton, a very Pleasant town indeed!

Each piece I create is as unique as my customers. The feel good factor from purchasing from me comes from knowing that my bedding sets are all creatively designed by me, are all completely individual and are made of sustainably produced cotton dyed in the USA. (This means that the cotton is either recycled, or grown with less water, chemical fertiliser and pesticide, while increasing profit margins for farmers).

Creating my bedding sets involve many hours of careful attention to detail; each set goes through several processes before it is ironed and packaged to send out to you by Priority Mail. This includes a first wash to remove ‘sizing’ when cotton is new, soaking in soda ash so the dyes attach to the fibers, swirling or folding the bedding (these sets are heavy to work with!), mixing and carefully applying the dyes, wrapping and leaving in the warm Californian sunshine to set the colors for 48 hours, rinsing, rinsing and more rinsing, line drying and then careful ironing when damp.

Tie dye is super fun and I’m always learning. The joy of first opening a new design makes me happy and I’d love to pass this joy on to you when you snuggle down under your rainbow, cotton bedding set for a wonderful night’s sleep.

Please keep in mind that different computers and devices display colors differently, the color of the actual item may vary slightly from the images in my listings.
Also, as my work is 100% hand-dyed , there will be differences between each item.

What's in a name? Duvet, Comforter, Quilt or Coverlet?

A duvet is occasionally called a comforter, and a comforter a duvet! To make things even more confusing bedding options can also include a quilt or a coverlet.

Duvets originated in Europe and were made from the down feathers of the eider duck, known for its usefulness as a thermal insulator. These days duvets are typically filled with a natural of synthetic fibers and are of varying thicknesses to determine the level of warmth required. They range from lightweight and versatile to extremely warm for the coldest nights. The duvet is usually white or a neutral color. A duvet cover protects the duvet, in the same way a pillowcase covers and protects a pillow insert. A duvet cover is easy to change so you can change the look of your bed as often as you want. It also protects the duvet and should be easy to wash. Duvets and duvet covers are designed to be used alone (with no sheets) because the insert can be removed and the outer "bag" can be laundered.

A comforter is similar to a duvet except that it doesn't have a separate cover. The fabric of the comforter has a printed or woven pattern that creates the design of the bed. Like a duvet, it's filled and quilted but usually comes as part of a set with coordinating shams.

Traditionally composed of three layers of fiber, quilts consist of a woven cloth top, a layer of batting and a woven back, all stitched together is a decorative pattern. They have many classic patterns and traditions which can mark important life events such as graduations or marriage.

A coverlet is a lightweight, non-reversible bedspread that is usually either quilted or woven. Classically designed as a decorative layer to go over thicker bedspreads, coverlets often have a thin layer of batting, making them appropriate for use as a stand-alone bed covering, depending on the weight. They can also be used as throws on a bed or sofa.
