Sales Rep gone Artsy
My name is Tia Costello and I live in the gorgeous, creative and weirdest city out there, Austin, TX, with my amazing husband and beautiful baby boy. I offer Furniture and Interior Design to the area, specializing in home staging and furniture restoration.
Since a child, my dream has always been to be an Interior Designer. I remember being so obsessed with decorating as I was growing up, which I think sometimes made my parents a bit crazy! Once I got to college, I was one of those kids who knew right away what they wanted to be. For two years I studied Art, Design, The History of Furniture, Drafting, lighting, etc., at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). I loved going to class every day and couldn't wait to see what classes I would get to take the following semester. After my sophomore year, I decided to move to Texas and transferred to the University of North Texas. Having a stellar college of Art and Design, I knew this was the right move for me. Unfortunately, only a few of my design classes from USM transferred and I was told I would have to pretty much start over from scratch. This added an additional two years to my college career making it a total of six years. This did not go over so well with my parents and in the end, it was decided that in order for me to graduate in four years, I had to switch my major to something that would allow me to do just that. So, I received a bachelors of Science in Sociology and a minor in Art.
After graduation, I was confused as to what to do for a job. I felt the pressure to get into the corporate scene right away. So, I entered the world of sales, taking over my dream of being an Interior Designer. The good new is, I actually enjoyed the fast paced, competitive way of sales and was quite successful, but as expected, those feelings did not last. I always had this passion inside of me for design and most of the time I found myself on an emotional roller coaster when it came to my career. After suppressing these feeling for over 10 years, I finally decided to take some time to reflect on what was important to me in my life and go for it.
I decided to open The Vintage Wheel after finishing a few furniture "projects" around my home. In the winter of 2012, my husband and I purchased our first home together. Of course I needed all new furniture and decor, but I knew we didn't have money growing on trees either. So, I searched Craigslist and went to garage and estate sales for the best deals I could find. I didn't care if the furniture was old, or had a weird color...I knew I could transform it and boy did I! I had a blast working on the furniture and when it was over, I was left feeling a bit empty and wanting to revive more. I quickly realized that I needed to be doing this as a career and here I am...loving every minute of it. I feel as if I am finally "at home" with myself and I could not be happier!
Since starting The Vintage Wheel in August of 2012, I was given the opportunity to display and sell my furniture in a design store right in the heart of downtown Austin, and now I am working with clients on home projects to create beautiful and functional environments. To perfect my business, I have decided to go back to school and "officially" become an Interior Designer like I have always dreamed I would be. I will continue my love of furniture restoration and working with clients on home projects during and after I complete school. Except now, not only will I understand the true elements of design, the possibilities for my company will be endless.
I look forward to working with you and thank you for your continued support.
After working as a sales representative for over 10 years, I decided to break away from the corporate scene and follow my one true passion in life, Design. I love Furniture and Interior Design and I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
At The Vintage Wheel I make sure to take my time with each piece, painting, waxing, and shading it correctly. I typically do not sand or "rough up" my pieces unless it is requested for a custom piece. I like to age furniture with shading because I find it adds more depth to the piece and keeps it looking a bit cleaner. Sometime Shabby Chic furniture can get a little TOO SHABBY, if you know what I mean...
