About

Artwork and Vintage Décor

TheWillies- Eclectic and Whimsical...

Over the years I have experimented in several art mediums: acrylic on canvas, acrylic on etched wood panels and with gourds to produce mostly vases and masks. The theme to my work had been mostly Southwestern. I have had my work juried into various shows by Knoxville and Oak Ridge Arts Councils. My work has been sold at galleries and shops in the Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Townsend area.

Being a high school teacher afforded me the time during summer break to develop my art skills. Also, we were able to travel to the Southwest as we continue to do so today. We like to visit the many galleries in that area, and of course hike and explore the desert and ancient ruins. Then in early 2000 my focus turned from art to bass fishing during the summer months.

In January 2009, after 30 years of service, I retired from teaching. So that winter while it was too cold to fish; I picked up a paint brush and started painting small landscapes. They were fun and a local gallery took a couple of them on consignment. I gave the best one to the biggest collector of my work, Beth, our daughter. I also started working with gourds again and began to produce gourd flowers and many other objects of art including angels, trucks and ponies.

Finally in November of 2009 I discovered an outlet for all my work. ETSY!

I am always interested in what it is going to look like when I am finished.Be it an artwork that is in progress or a piece that I have found.

Shop policies

Welcome to The Willies. All items for sale in this shop are the handmade and/or painted creation of Sam Willoughby. Unless otherwise noted all art work has been completed within the last 3 years. My latest efforts have been the creation of human-like-figures which are The Willies. I feel that these whimsical figures help bring about balance in today’s world of high technology. For carved wood pieces such as Bread Baker and Southwest Travel I use Western Pine. For all others such as rustic angels and trucks I use ruff sawn Cedar. Some characteristics of ruff sawn wood are chips and cracks with rough surfaces and edges which in my opinion add charm to the piece.
