Announcement   Welcome to The Yarn Owl's Nest. I specialise in hand knitted baby and children's hats and bonnets for photography props and everyday wear. A hand knitted hat makes the perfect photography prop as well as a beautiful and useful gift for a new baby. I have hats to suit both boys and girls, as well as unisex hats, in a huge range of designs and colours.

I knit in a range of materials including wool, ethical angora, alpaca and vegan yarns. I love stripes and bright colours and enjoy creating something that looks good, is practical and has a sense of fun as well.

****Hat sizing****

The measurements I have listed for my hats are the unstretched measurements. To get a comfy fit you need to choose a hat that measures about an inch smaller than your babies head in the smaller (newborn) sizes and one and a half or even two inches smaller for the larger toddler/child sizes. Knitting is stretchy so if you chose a hat the actual size of your babies head it may be too loose and depending on the design could fall down.

To measure your child’s head ideally use a tape measure but if you don’t have a tape measure a piece of string or wool would work to gently hold around their head which you can then measure up against a ruler afterwards. Measure around the head across the widest part just at the top of their ears. If you are unsure which hat to choose please feel free to contact me with your measurements and we can work out which size is most suitable for your little one.

Custom orders are always welcome, if you see something you like but need a different size or would like a different colourway/yarn please contact me.

About

Hats and mittens for special little heads

I learnt to knit as a girl but put my needles down as a teen and only picked them up again when I was expecting my first baby. I enjoyed knitting for both my children and as they grew and I met more Mums and children I started to knit for friends and family as well. After much encouragement from those close to me I finally realised my dream to start my own business and here it is!

I have always loved owls, their quiet watchfulness, their ability to see through the darkness and their association with Athena (the Greek goddess of Wisdom). I have always wanted to knit an owl, something which I am yet to find time to do so the yarn owl is still a work in progress!

I want my shop to be somewhere to buy a quirky everyday hat or mittens as well as a place to come for something a bit more special. I enjoy working with photographers to create photo props for those special newborn photo shoots.

I enjoy creating from a broad range of yarn, from the practical acrylics through cottons and bamboos to the warm merino and wool mix yarns. I love rainbows and stripes and try and incorporate lots of colour into my work whenever I can.

I am a work from home Mum and the sole breadwinner in my household so as well as being my passion, my business provides my family's bread and butter (and cake ingredients!). I am extremely blessed to be able to do the work I love every day, and grateful to each and every customer for helping me to achieve this.

Welcome to my shop, TheYarnOwlsNest. I enjoy and take pride in knitting and crafting my items and I hope you have found something you like here.

I like to work with a range of natural and manmade yarns so that you can choose the material that you prefer, from vegan yarns, alpaca, merino and hand dyed wool, and everything in between!!

If you see something you like but would prefer a different colour, size or yarn please contact me and I'll be pleased to come up with a custom order with you. Yarn prices vary hugely dependent on what the yarn is made of and how it is produced so please bear this in mind when thinking about custom orders.

Refunds and Exchanges
I want you to be happy with you purchase. If you have any questions or would like more photos or measurements for something please contact me before you buying.

If you do decide you need to return the item please contact me so we can arrange a return as soon as possible. The item must be in the same condition in which it was sent to you, and unworn. Please contact me before returning anything. Shipping/delivery costs are not refundable.
Additional policies and FAQs
I am always happy to do custom orders, please contact me with your requirements.

If your custom order requires me to buy new yarn then I may ask for a small non-returnable deposit to cover the costs of the material.

With custom orders please remember I am a full time mum with young children, I will try as hard as I can to get your item knitted quickly but if you can give me as much notice as possible that would be really appreciated!
