The Yarn Yogi Story
Once upon a time there was a little girl (I'm only 4'11") who graduated from California State University Fullerton with a degree in Accounting but she probably should have gotten a degree in Fine Arts because she sucks at accounting. However, because of her Accounting Degree she was always able to get a stable, boring, unfulfilling job all the while, in her spare time, crocheting, knitting, dancing, and teaching yoga to satisfy her true, creative nature.
Then, one day, after many years as accountant by day and artist by night, she decides to make a go at designing a crochet shrug. She writes the pattern for the shrug, lists it on Etsy and, amazingly, it sells like crazy! So, she writes more patterns and they sell also! The Yarn Yogi is born! She has finally found a way to earn money using her creative talents. She collects inspirational photos for future designs and starts selling on other websites. She makes plans to quit her day job and become a professional crochet artist. Then, her world came crashing down on her.
Her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness, ALS. Her future now consists of being the primary caretaker of her husband while she watches him become completely paralyzed, body part by body part. The pace of her crocheting and designing came to a crawl while she spent all her time caring for him, working, raising a son, and managing the house.
But, this turns out to be a happy story! Even though her husband is almost completely paralyzed, he is the happiest he has ever been and people and resources came out of the woodwork to help. The Yarn Yogi is able to crochet and design a little bit - not every day - but enough to get her through the most difficult time in her life. And, her patterns are still selling. Even though she won't be able to grow her business as fast as she originally thought she still plans on releasing new patterns, slowly but surely.
Owner, Maker, Designer
I call myself a crochet fashion designer. I think I can call myself that because that is what I do with the majority of my time. If I am not crocheting, sketching, swatching and surfing the web for inspiration, I am thinking about crochet design.
