Tafuri Studios started small as a one-woman operation & continues to grow while providing jewelry designers world wide with quality leather pieces
Tafuri Studios started with one woman, a sweet husband, and one small Etsy store. Mary & Blue Tafuri started creating and wholesaling a line of leather components for jewelry makers back in 2006. When our distributors fell in love, and customers made them best sellers, we brought them to Etsy and opened our first "retail outlet".
When we started out, I had 5 years experience working in the Marketing Department in the international wholesale jewelry supplies industry and 11 years as a jewelry artist. My husband Blue had 15 years experience working at his family costume store, mostly with leather. When I wanted ready-made leather components for my jewelry, all I could find were the same one's I'd used in Girl Scouts as a girl.
So we became the first to offer ready made cuff blanks, quality leather strap and specialty cut Cuff-End sets for jewelry designers. Our mission was to keep our supplies in the USA, and we carefully researched and studied the leather culture, while realizing there were a lot of hurdles to climb before it would be an easy thing to create. We created steel dies out of patterns we thought people would like- then we went to town trying every leather under the sun, and researching the chemicals and process that would help us create the safest product possible. We eventually opened (and closed) a retail supply store in Spokane Washington, have been published in "Beautiful Leather Jewelry" by Melissa Cable, BeadStyle magazine, PBS and many other DYI publishers across the internet.
Last winter we closed our first brick and mortar supplies shop, and at the same time, celebrated small connections; consulting with TierraCast to help bring hundreds of new precious metal plated leather components to the market for leather jewelry lovers. This involved a bit of research and a lot of talking- I passionately shared all I learned to this USA based company, tested rivets, and hitch posts, and fielded many many questions. We are very proud to offer these fine TierraCast USA made components to our customers.
With six wonderful family members keeping life and work fun, we stay passionate about what we create, and each piece of leather is lovingly crafted for your needs using only the highest quality USA made GENUINE leather and eco-safe dye and treatment processes that we can find.
Our Tafuri Tough™ Leather Jewelry components have been a featured staple in jewelry design since 2007. With projects in Wire Work Magazine, Art Jewelry, Beads Baubles and more, and BeadStyle Mag, our leather has been loved by industry professionals and hobby jewelry makers world-wide. Trusted suppliers like TierraCast have even remarked that our's is the highest quality they've seen on the supplies market. We are proud of our 100% positive feedback and always put our customers health and safety before our profits. Our's may cost a little more, but that is the difference between Genuine Leather, and imported "real" leather.

Owner, Maker, Designer
We may be an itty bitty family run studio, with a big family and day jobs and night jobs and projects coming out of our ears, yet we're proud that we still manage to offer reasonable shipping times, excellent customer service AND a quality product.
Our regular stock leather is 100% genuine leather (never bonded), non-toxic, eco-safe & USA MADE. Even the cows are American made. Why choose our leather over the competitors? Because we always put quality and your health before our profits.
Leather is a natural product because - cows. Ours has a hand-made look because - people. Sections of leather sides can vary in thickness & firmness, & can also take dyes differently. Items can feature brand marks & scarring caused by the normal activity of being an animal or the marks that occur during leather tanning and dying processes.
Our dying process for our firm tooling leather is an 11-step process, that not only applies several coats of water based eco-safe dyes, but seals it in using layers of waxes and natural oils. We hand rub that stuff in, one layer at a time, buffing each piece with a soft cotton cloth, all to protect it from dye bleeding. In the process the leather softens. It will soften even more when you wear it. If you find it does not arrive soft enough, and you can smell or see that sweet bee's wax coating, grab an old tee shirt and start buffing. You'll shine her up and soften her in no time. And you'll love the smell. ;)
When we are choosing pieces for your order, we hand select the best GENUINE LEATHER pieces that we have available in our inventory & offer the safest and best quality genuine supple & tooling leathers available on the US leather market; but our leather is not perfect, nor is it water proof, bullet proof or fire proof. So please do not wear when performing super hero activities like saving the universe from monsters. Unless it's Zombies. Everyone knows that zombies can't bite through leather. So stock up because we've been hearing rumors. ;)
Thanks for trusting us with your hard earned dollars. We'll be sure we earn them as well and if you find your experience anything less than pleasant- please let us know.

Tafuri Studios is a family run business, offering hand crafted leather pieces for Jewelry designers, created by husband and wife team Mary & Blue Tafuri, with help from our kiddos (all big's, not littles). Each family craftsperson makes careful quality leather choices for your products and takes individual pride in the craftsmanship needed to cut, dye and treat each piece. We handle all returns on a case-by-case basis, and reserve the right to refuse a refund. But this has only happened twice. So mostly, we're just nice and replace it for you.

Additional policies and FAQs
In addition to the toxic bonding materials, some plastic coatings & petroleum based dyes can also be highly toxic! The plasticized PVC coating process has not been properly stabilized to prevent leeching of toxins into the skin. The "P" in pvc is the plasticizer that is leeching into virtually everything it comes in contact with. Even the air we breath.
I never suggest a child, or pregnant or nursing mother wear any leather that is not 100% genuine, non toxic and USA made. 85-90% of all Genuine leather is either using a vegetable tanned or highly stabilized chrome tanning process. In this process either vegetable based products or trivalent chrome is used because it is highly stable and will not break down or leech out of the leather. Studies from 2004 show that many imported leathers are tanned with an unsafe, less stable form of chrome, in addition to the plastic coatings, that will leech out.
When it comes to our *regular stock leather jewelry supplies- you can trust Tafuri Leather. We do the research & create only the safest products possible, partnering with the best USA leather tanneries in the nation.
*Please note this statement applies to our regular stock leather. We cannot guarantee the chemical content of exotic leather remnants or bulk leather scrap. Although we always try. Non-toxic listings will be labeled as such. In the mean time, if it smells like glue and feels like plastic, we recommend tossing it into the nearest incinerator. Trust your instincts. Leather should only feel and smell like... well leather. ;)
