About

The Third Sister

A Traditional Line

If you’re looking for ultra modern or shabby chic, try another shop. I lean towards traditional, classic patterns and fabrics. I learned to sew by watching my mother as she made our dresses, and she bought me my own treadle sewing machine when I was nine. Sometimes I’ll use my great-grandmother Sarah Jane’s thimble for a special project. I like to think a little bit of history goes into everything I do.

Personal Service

Custom order or not, each item gets my personal attention from start to finish. This isn't a big business. I don't have any employees. This is just me, my sewing, calligraphy, cards and more, by hand and machine, in my home, with my mother carefully pressing tissue paper and helping to wrap boxes. I don't drive, so often your packages will be walked to our post office, going through beautiful downtown Lawrence, Kansas.

These aren't items you can find on sale at the store by the dozens. They are made individually, with care. Some smocking patterns take as many as 11 hours to complete. The baptism gown, slip and bonnet for my goddaughter took about 22 hours from start to finish! This included making rows and rows of pintucks and stitching sprays of cast-on roses by hand. Calligraphy projects get mapped out several times before I begin. And, yes, sometimes I do make a mistake on the very last line! I take a deep breath and start over from scratch. (That’s why I have lots of scrap paper!)

Labor of Love

Each item is unique—a piece of myself. Maybe that’s why I can’t do anything halfway. I won’t settle for “good enough.” Chances are I designed that birthday card especially for my cousin. Or I made that same dress for my own niece. I calligraph envelopes like these for letters to family and friends. When you get your package from me, I want you to feel like I did years ago, when I’d get a surprise box from Mammy, my grandma.

Besides being a talented musician, my oldest brother, Leo, builds the most beautiful guitars and mandolins. While nothing that I do is on a par with his creations, I hope that at least the love and care and attention to detail that I give to my work measures up to his.

I am the third and youngest sister. I was lucky to have a mother who was home with me, who sewed for me, who gave me the gift of those precious growing up years, hours and days, when I discovered what I love to do.

Welcome! I am the third and youngest sister, and I've never outgrown my love of pretty dresses and wearing and making beautiful things.

After being inspired by my aunt, I started smocking in 1994, and since then have created more than 100 smocked and embroidered outfits, using mostly my own designs.

My handmade greeting cards have grown from a life-long love of artwork........and writing long letters to aunts and uncles! These are my own designs, and many are one-of-a-kind. These are hand-stamped, inked, sometimes painted or perhaps hand-lettered as well, so please allow for slight variations in color and pattern.

I hope you like what you see. Please come back soon!

Shipping
**Calligraphy and clothing are typically shipped Priority by USPS within the continental United States. To keep prices down, greeting cards ship first class. Upgrades are available for an additional charge. Just convo me! I'm happy to work with you.

**For your safety and mine, all orders do come with tracking. I cannot replace or refund any package lost by the mail. I do, however, keep a close eye on tracking. Particularly during the holiday season, packages can be delayed or go astray. I do my utmost to get your order to you on time.

** I want your order to reach you in perfect condition, so I am very careful with my packing. Your calligraphy/greeting cards will be placed securely in a "stay-flat" mailer inside a bubble envelope to protect from any damage. I write instructions: “DO NOT BEND” clearly on the package, but if for some reason, it has been damaged along the way, please contact me immediately!

**Children's clothes are wrapped in tissue paper and ship in wrapped boxes. Doll outfits, depending on size, will ship either in a box or padded envelope.

**Custom and personalized orders are completed in a timely fashion. I will let you know when I ship your item.
Additional policies and FAQs
Custom orders are always welcome. If you don't find what you're looking for, if you have specific needs for a one-of-a-kind outfit, please let me know, and I'd be happy to work with you. If you need a special pack of cards--invitations for a baby shower or thank you cards for a wedding, for instance--please let me know. I'd be happy to personalize items as well.
