I can't remember a time when I wasn't creating.

I started my first Etsy shop, ScottsMountainCrafts, in 2006 when I started hammering on metal and making shawl pins. That turned into what is now a very popular shop for Fiber craft tools - Yarnswifts, Nostepinnes, Yarn Gauges and recently, Tapestry bobbins. While I am still the main tester and user of all my husbands wonderful wood creations, I needed a space for my own art - my jewelry, patterns, tangled creations. That's why This Little Bird Told me was born - a spot for my whimsies, a home for my art and jewelry, a place to share what I create.
My crafting history......I learned how to crochet at 4 years old after begging my Great Aunt Marie to teach me - I think she was tired of making me doll hat after doll hat. Crochet was my first fiber-love, along with needlepoint and macramé. At 27, My Mother-in-Law tried to teach me how to knit when we were expecting our first child. That was a difficult undertaking for me, and it really didn't click until my Mother-in-Law and I both purchased a knitting machine. Finally, I understood knitting and I've been hand-knitting ever since. Shortly after moving to New Jersey, on a vacation in New England with my husband and children - my husband had visited an antique shop that also was a sheep farm....and they sold baskets of fleece, one of which he presented to me, announcing "you can make your own yarn!" Trying to learn to spin on my own, found me taking lessons at a somewhat nearby shop and I took to it like a duck to water. A short time later, my husband bought a huge floor loom at an auction....for $25. We both set to the task of learning to warp it and weave something, but that was a huge loom and we ended up selling it. A few years later, when my children where a little older and a little less likely to get all tangled up in my stuff, I did purchase another small floor loom and taught my self to weave. These fibercrafts are my main-stays.....I always have some sort of project(s) at hand.

Then in 2006, I learned metal working after knitting a few shawls and not having any kind of shawl pin available - my husband (aka, the great enabler) presented me with a hammer and a length of copper wire. Jewelry making has become just as much a part of what I do as my Fibercrafts.

Lastly, it's hard for me to remember a time when I haven't sketched, painted, and doodled, so when my blog friend, Opal, introduced me to Zentangle, it was like I found a long-lost friend. You'll find some of my Tangled Whorls, boxes, and drawings in the shop too.

Sometimes I worry that I seem to have a little crafting addiction, but then I look back on all the things that I have learned and all the things I've created. It brings me such a huge sense of satisfaction, this making of things, I don't see it stopping any time soon. My crafts are my comfort, my relaxation, it's what grounds me and keeps me sane. As long as I'm breathing, I'll be crafting!
