I really like the jean bag. It's even bigger than I thought it would be. But, I manage to fill it up. Very nice workmanship. Thank you. Denise

About

Threadneedle Farm, home of Melody's World Cloth Dolls

My home, Threadneedle Farm, is located in the pine belt of Mississippi, not far from the ridge that separates the Pearl and Mississippi rivers. It is home to pine trees, several dogs, a cat, chickens, and a seamstress with sore fingers. And lots and lots of dolls!

When I was a child my great-aunt taught me to sew on her old Singer Model 27 when my legs weren't quite long enough to work the treadle properly. We began by making dresses and petticoats for the porcelain dolls she had given me and my sister when we were little. As my skills improved, I made more clothes as well as cloth dolls to wear them.

My lifelong interest in fashion history began with dressing those elegant porcelain ladies, with their prim little china button boots, impeccably coiffed sculpted hair, and their painted rosebud lips. When I became an adult I drew on this experience to dress my friends for living history events, re-enactments, and Renaissance Faires as if they were living dolls (and they were glad to play along).

After spending 17 over-stressed and underpaid years in the community newspaper business, I decided that I needed a change. In fact my health insisted upon it! Now I am once again making dolls and the clothes they wear, driven by a compelling interest in fashion history and the Victorian dolls that were my favorites as a child. Not to mention a need to pay the bills and avoid a long commute to work because, let's face it, Threadneedle Farm is in the middle of nowhere. While I recover my health I am trying to make a go of this whole home-based business thing. So far so good.

I call my line of dolls Melody's World for a rather obvious reason. My name is Melody Worrell, and I have been hearing people mispronounce it for most of my life. My branch of the family pronounces it as one syllable, not two, so that sounds rather like "world" without the D at the end. Rhymes with squirrel (unless you're from the parts of England that say it "squeerel" in which case it doesn't, ha!)

By the way, I still have the Model 27 Singer treadle machine that I learned to sew on as a child. It doesn't see as much use nowadays, but I still sit down to treadle occasionally. Especially during a pesky power failure, which happens frustratingly often in these parts in the summertime. Pine trees like to fall in storms, usually on power lines. But no matter how many storms or how many trees fall, we never seem to run out of them here at Threadneedle Farm.

I am a seamstress and dollmaker located in the Mississippi piney woods. As a child I learned to sew on an old Singer treadle machine, with the help of my grandfather's sister,by making historical clothing for my dolls and then dolls too.
