About

TideSpool creates useful, beautiful things for adventurous people.

I specialize in items of use for kayakers and reusable fabric gift wrap. This improbable combination comes from my passion for sewing, my love of outdoor adventure, and my desire to help reduce humanity’s waste footprint. The TideSpool studio is 100% powered by renewable energy.

In the late 80s, I helped organize, advertise, and staff our area’s drop-off recycling site (curbside recycling didn't exist yet). Years later, when I found out about furoshiki wraps, their reusable aspect instantly appealed to me.

I bought my first sewing machine in 2002 so I could make my own curtains and placemats. After ramping up my skills, I began sewing clothes, and I now enjoy creating my own patterns, dyeing fabric, and repurposing garments into brand-new creations. The TideSpool studio has three different types of sewing machines oriented towards making things that look great and last.

I’m an avid sea kayaker; I love day trips, long-distance races, surfing, and expeditions. I made my own silnylon stuff sacks to organize and protect clothing and gear when backpacking and kayak camping; now they are an essential part of my kit. I started storing my boats with homemade mesh covers to keep nasty critters out while letting water evaporate from the cockpits and hatches. After seeing a small swarm of wasps crawl out from under a fellow paddler’s seat at lunchtime one day, I realized other kayak owners might want to use my covers too!

Thanks for visiting the TideSpool Etsy shop! I hope you’ll find some items that you can enjoy, reuse, and give to others!

Frequently asked questions
Shipping: Can I get you to deliver items to me in person, so that I don’t have to pay shipping?

In general, no. I allow Etsy to calculate the shipping cost based on item weight, so I am not aiming to make a profit on shipping. Etsy shipping rates are cheaper than what US Postal Service charges, and many of my items are very lightweight. Join my email list to find out about coupons and occasional free shipping specials by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://tinyurl.com/TideSpoolEmailSignup.

I may make an exception if we're sure we'll see each other soon, so contact me through an Etsy conversation or by emailing krista [at] tidespool.com and we can discuss.

Fabric wraps: Can you help me figure out what size will wrap my gifts? How do I wrap my gifts?

Yes, tell me the dimensions of what you'd like to wrap, and I'll let you know what size fabric gift wrap will fit it.
You can also find a size chart in the photos for each fabric wrap listing, or you can copy and paste the following link into your browser: https://img1.etsystatic.com/199/0/16350620/il_570xN.1404574037_7izu.jpg.

Fabric Wraps: Isn't this more expensive than wrapping paper?

It may still seem like a lot to pay to wrap a single gift, but keep in mind that like clothing, the wraps can be used over and over again. If you're concerned about cost, you might consider using fabric wraps within your household at first, or using them for someone you exchange gifts with regularly, so that you can trade them back and forth.

Mesh Covers: Are the kayak hatch and cockpit covers waterproof? Can I use them for transport?

The covers are made of very fine mosquito (no-see-um) mesh and are not waterproof. So if you store your kayak in an area exposed to precipitation, you will need to turn it upside-down after cinching the covers tight.
Remove mesh covers before putting your kayak on your car.

Mesh Covers: Do I need to send you hatch or cockpit measurements?

It depends on what type of hatches your kayak uses, and whether I have previously created covers for your model of kayak. As long as you tell me the brand, model, and size of your kayak, I can look up the dimensions of most kayak hatches and cockpits from manufacturers’ websites. If I cannot find this information, I will ask you to take some measurements and email them to me. If a cover I send you doesn’t fit, I will correct the problem free of charge.

Mesh Covers: Which set of covers should I order?

If you want to order hatch covers, count the number of hatches on the kayak and then order from the product listing that matches the number of hatches:

Mesh Covers: I just want a cockpit cover. How do I order that?

Stuff Sacks: Are the stuff sacks waterproof?

No. The fabric is waterproof, but due to the drawstring closure and sewn seams, the sacks themselves are only water-resistant. Do not rely on them alone to prevent water exposure to expensive electronic devices. (Personally, I find that the stuff sacks are an excellent layer of extra protection for any electronic devices and batteries that I put in my dry bags.)

Stuff Sacks: I’ve written on both sides of the stuff sack label. How do I change it? Can I remove the tape label?

Apply a new piece of electrical tape over the label. If needed, you can carefully cut off the label and apply a new one.

Coupon Codes: When I apply a coupon code, nothing happens. Why?

If there are minimum purchase criteria (either dollar amount or number of items), put items in your cart to meet these criteria, then enter the coupon code to receive the discount.
