About

Why I love to design, knit and crochet beanies, scarves, cowls, neck warmers and mittens in colourful wool

Holding tiny broken knitting needles and rewinding scraps of wool into minuscule balls is my first memory of knitting. It was a long time ago, before television in fact because I was a preschooler listening to Kindergarten of the Air. Finally, when I was eight I knitted my first garment - a doll's dress. I had come up with the brilliant idea of speeding up by knitting two stitches together ! Well - it did form the yoke. Two years later I made an 8 ply V neck jumper for myself and was hooked for life ! (pun intended)

My paternal great - grandmother taught my mother to crochet but I couldn't figure it out till I was about twenty one. I've still got the Woman's Day pattern for the yellow and brown fair aisle sort of vest which I wore to uni. I made a few more vests and started making beanies to match. Well, it was the seventies ! In fact I use exactly the same pattern from the same Patons book for the open style crocheted beanie I sell here on TigsTogs.

A lot of people have asked where my name comes from. I dreamed up the name one day long before I opened this shop three years ago. Dad used to call me and my three sisters by our nicknames. My nickname was Tig ( short for tiger) . He was fond of calling his cossies (swim trunks) "togs" so I combined the two and my make believe shop was born - TigsTogs.

While I was still working and knitting for myself and my grandchildren , I decided it might be good to sell some items at markets once I had retired. The kids said, "Mum, you should open an Etsy store". So I did (after a year of nagging) .

I had never designed anything before I opened TigsTogs on Etsy so the design aspect is completely new to me. It gives me the opportunity to choose yarns which will work well with my designs and to sell my patterns. My youngest sister (Deidy) tested my first pattern - the slouchy beanie.

I've also been selling at a couple of different markets over the past twelve months and this year (2016) I will be selling beanies, scarves and mittens at the Old Bus Depot Markets in Canberra ACT.

I attribute a lot of my success on Etsy to a great team called Australian Wandarrah whose members are supportive and full of sound advice here and on Instagram. (www.instagram.com/tigstogs). I've recently joined another great Etsy team - Canetsy a team based in Canberra.

Happy customers like Trudie are also very important.
"Hi Meg,
Thank you so much for the prompt shipping, the messages and of course the stunning cowl!! I adore it!!!
I loved how you packaged it it. It was such a treat to open it up and see just how gorgeous it is. I am thrilled to bits :)
Thank you so much
Trudie :)"

I also love having repeat customers because I know they love their warm winter woolies from me at TigsTogs. I'd love to hear from you if you are interested in something here in my shop.
Thanks for having a look around,
Meg
