The Art of Science and the Science of Art
Los animales y la naturaleza siempre han sido mi pasión. De niña, rescataba arañas de bañeras, leía libros en lo alto de un viejo manzano y perdía la noción del tiempo explorando senderos y arroyos cerca de mi casa. En la universidad, me licencié en zoología y me sumergí en los estudios de taxonomía, anatomía comparada y etología. Profundizando en las ciencias biológicas, aprendí sobre los ecosistemas y el delicado equilibrio de la naturaleza. Empecé a trabajar en zoológicos, centros de vida silvestre y consultorios veterinarios, y fui voluntaria en sociedades humanitarias, perros guía para ciegos e incluso en un santuario de chimpancés. En algún momento, comencé a dibujar a los animales y luego a pintarlos... siempre buscando una nueva forma de conectar con ellos y comprender mejor su mundo. Cuando mi carrera se desvió hacia la educación y me convertí en bibliotecaria escolar, descubrí el poder de la narración y su capacidad para involucrar, educar e inspirar. Empecé a estudiar ilustración y tomé clases de pintura y diseño digital. Perfeccioné mis habilidades aceptando encargos artísticos y creé cientos de pinturas digitales para particulares, empresas y organizaciones sin fines de lucro. Hoy, mi arte refleja fielmente los caminos que he recorrido en la vida. Combinando las técnicas y la temática de la ilustración científica con los aspectos narrativos de la narración, espero que mi arte fomente una mayor empatía y aprecio por los demás seres vivos, y nos recuerde a todos el extraordinario mundo natural que nos rodea y nuestro papel vital en su preservación.
Animals and nature have always been my passion. As a child, I saved spiders from bathtubs, read books high up in an old apple tree, and lost track of time exploring trails and creeks near my house. In college, I earned a degree in zoology and immersed myself in the studies of taxonomy, comparative anatomy, and ethology. Diving deep into the biological sciences, I learned about ecosystems and the delicate balance of nature. I began working at zoos, wildlife centers and vet offices and volunteered with humane societies, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and even a chimpanzee sanctuary. Somewhere along the way, I began sketching the animals, then painting them . . . always seeking a new way to connect with them and better understand their world. When my career took a detour into education and I became a school librarian, I discovered the power of storytelling and its ability to engage, educate and inspire. I began studying illustration and took classes in digital painting and design. I honed my skills by accepting art commissions and went on to create hundreds of digital paintings for individuals, businesses, and nonprofits. Today, my art is a true reflection of the paths my life has taken. Combining the techniques and subject matter of scientific illustration with the narrative aspects of storytelling, I hope my art will foster a deeper sense of empathy and appreciation for other living things and remind us all of the extraordinary natural world that surrounds us and our vital role in its preservation.
