My tops are turned from locally collected hardwoods such as pear, sycamore, osage orange, maple, oak, and some imported woods. I'm fortunate to live in a neighborhood with many trees over 100 years old and storms produce lots of free material, even in our backyard! The turned tops are decorated with non-toxic paints, and finished with durable lacquer and wax. Each top has been tested for balance and will spin for several minutes on a smooth surface. A dinner plate is an excellent platform for spinning. The tops come with a handle and a braided nylon string with attached bead.

Every top I sell is made by me using a Nova lathe. Although some tops are similar, each is one of a kind and unique. The final profile emerges as the gouge cuts into the wood turning on the lathe. To spin properly, the wood of a top must be uniform throughout. Sometimes knots and uneven areas are discovered and these must be cut away or the top discarded. Some tops end up in the fireplace.

Supported tops can easily be spun by children. My wife keeps a collection of tops in her 2nd grade classroom for use during indoor recess or free time. All the children quickly become proficient in spinning. Winding and spinning a top improves a child's dexterity and coordination. Winding the string around the axle is more challenging than setting the top spinning. In general, the smaller tops and those made from lighter woods are easier to spin, while the larger tops or those made of denser woods require a stronger pull for long spins. Disc-shaped tops are easier to spin. Open-ended handles (U-shaped) are easier for children to wind than closed-ended (O-shaped) handles.

Tops make unique gifts for children and adults. A spinning top is also an excellent relaxation device as an executive desk toy.

SPINNING TIPS.

The tops spin best on a smooth surface; a dinner plate or large tray works well.

Tops should not be used on fine furniture or delicate surfaces because the tip may leave marks while spinning.

For best results in winding, put the axle through the small hole in the handle. Thread the string through the axle and turn the top so the string winds on the axle. Hold the string between your fingers to keep some tension on the string while winding.

When wound, hold the top vertical about an inch from the surface and pull string briskly to set top spinning. Remove handle.

With the double tops, wind one top at a time then adjust strings so the bead pull is at the center of the support.

If, after a while, spinning seems a bit sluggish, wax the axle with paste wax or rub lightly with paraffin or a candle.

If the end of string becomes frayed, cut off the frayed part and hold end over a flame briefly to fuse the nylon.
