Traditional technique used with non- traditional materials.

Surprisingly, I've been making jewelry for over 30 year now. It doesn't seem that it could be that long but I've done the math. I feel very fortunate to have discovered this passion so early. I took a jewelry class as an elective in my last year of college and that was all it took. I then did everything I could to learn this craft.

After College I was a student at Penland School of Crafts and then learned production work in a small jewelry/rock'nroll clothing shop (it was the 80s.) I was fortunate to return to Penland as a core student -- I spent two years there studying metalwork in exchange for cooking on the weekends. I moved on to work in a jewelry store where I learned to work in gold and set diamonds. My next venture was graduate school at Southern Illinois University--Carbondale where I earned an MFA.

I moved to Florida for a two year Artist Residency and ended up staying for 23. I'm now back in the Mid-West. I spent many years supporting myself with a line of fashion oriented sterling that I sold in shows and through galleries. My bread and butter though was commission work in gold and precious stones.

Throughout I've had a lot of help and guidance. I think it is important to return this so I teach. I've held workshops throughout the country including Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and John C Campbell Folk School. I'm pleased to have completed a circle by teaching numerous times at Penland School of Crafts. It was also an honor to have written the chapter, "Re-imagining technique" in "The Penland Book of Jewelry," published by Lark Books.

I have stopped doing commission work and my current focus is on the beauty of "everyday" materials. I seek to take items that don't generally get a second look and transform them into wearable objects that celebrate and expand notions of beauty.

I happily share this life with my wife, the artistic director of a theater company for young audiences, and our indifferent tortoise shell cat.

I like to make stuff. Specifically I like to make stuff for people to wear. Jewelry fascinates me. What people wear, how they wear it, what I can make wearable and how I can make it are the kinds of things that daily occupy my attention.

My work is all hand fabricated directly out of the materials I use. I bring a goldsmith’s sensibility to all materials, precious or otherwise. Jewelry fascinates me. For eons humans have worn anything and everything on their bodies and the jewelry’s true value rests in what it means to the wearer.
