Absolutely beautiful - perfect 5th wedding anniversary gift for my husband - and it came gift wrapped. Thank you!
Making little boxes with timber and glass
I have an affection for every box I make, stemming from a love, appreciation and gratitude for the timber, which I regard as a most precious and valuable resource. I visualise the tree that the timber has come from and landscape where that tree is found.
I take a playful approach and may or may not even talk to the boxes as I 'dress/pair' them with their glass drawer knob or stitched leather - 'Now how do you feel about this?'.
I use all Australian timbers and variations in the individual properties of each one is vast. Getting to know an Australian tree and its timber is like getting to know a new person. How do they look? What are they like to work with? What do they need? How will they behave?. Sometimes, as with people, the most flawed turn out to be the most beautiful.

I love early mornings and icy cold coffees. I grew up in the desert. I talk to trees.
I make each box and drawer pull from scratch using various pieces of Australian timber, glass and leather and no two boxes are the same. I try to select pieces of wood with interesting and beautiful features or figuring. This means for example, that a Yellow Stringybark or Jarrah box may have naturally formed cracks or holes in it. To me, this all adds to the aesthetic appeal of the box. The beauty is in the flaws.
